Invincible Why OmniMan Leaves Earth (When No Other Viltrumite Has)

Invincible season 1 ends with Omni-Man leaving Earth; here’s why he left his post when no other Viltrumite has. The first season of Amazon Prime Video’s animated superhero series came to a close with a hard-hitting and emotional fight between Invincible and Omni-Man. Viewers long knew that Omni-Man was up to no good when he killed the Guardians of the Globe, but Invincible season 1’s ending tested just how far he would go to help the Viltrum empire grow.

The season one finale of Invincible included Omni-Man telling Invincible about the true plans of the Vultrumites and why he came to Earth. Omni-Man was chosen as one of Viltrum’s strongest members and sent to Earth to prepare it for an eventual takeover. He was tasked with staying on the planet until it was in the proper state for Viltrum to invade. Weakening the planet’s defenses is why Omni-Man killed the Guardians of the Globe, as the plan was to make Earth as easy to conquer as possible. When Invincible refused to join his father’s cause, Omni-Man was forced to fight his son since he now posed a threat to the Viltrum empire. However, Omni-Man left Earth at the end of Invincible season 1 before his job was done.

Omni-Man’s decides to leave Earth after he determines that he is not able to complete his mission. Viltrumites are supposed to do whatever it takes to expand the empire and put the needs of the empire above all else. Omni-Man can’t do this, though, when it means having to kill his son. This comes after a flashback to when Mark was just a kid and Debbie talks to Omni-Man about the importance of their children. The memory makes it clear to audiences and Omni-Man that his time on Earth and starting a family changed him. He’s no longer a hardened warrior with an unbreakable loyalty to a singular cause, as his care for Mark and others proves makes killing his son a line that he will not cross.

Even though Omni-Man was the only Viltrumite sent to conquer Earth, the decision to leave his post is unheard of for a Viltrumite. They are raised to be extremely loyal to the Viltrum empire and normally don’t form any attachments with the natives of the planet. Allen the Alien explains to Mark how unexpected this decision is. The entire goal of the Viltrumites is to conquer other worlds and expand the Viltrum empire. They’re meant to eliminate any threat that might stand in their way. That strategy hasn’t failed the Viltrumites to this point, but they’ve also never had one of their own not follow through. This decision might have only come after Omni-Man beat his child within an inch of his life and killed thousands around the world, but sparing Mark’s life and Earth from a Viltrum takeover still proves that Omni-Man learned what it is like to be human.

With the irregularity of a Viltrumite leaving its post, what is next for Omni-Man, Mark, and Earth in season 2? Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comics outline the character’s likely trajectory. Without getting too deep into potential spoilers, Omni-Man will find a new place to call home as he reflects on his life work. It’s also safe to say that he will return and encounter Mark again. But, his absence also leaves Earth somewhat vulnerable. Allen the Alien remarks that the Viltrumites will come for Earth once they hear about Omni-Man’s disappearance. All of this will be explored later on in Invincible due to Omni-Man leaving Earth.
