Iron Man Built A Humiliating Feature in War Machines Armor

Warning: contains spoilers for Iron Man #13!

Tony Stark may be one of the smartest heroes in the Marvel Universe, but Iron Man is not above putting embarrassing features in the armor of his friend War Machine. James Rhodes is one of Tony’s best and most loyal of friends; he’s stuck by him for decades and is his most stalwart ally. But in Iron Man #13, written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Cafu and colors by Frank D’Armata, Marvel shows a truly hilarious way in which War Machine’s suit was upgraded by Stark: an old-fashioned handle protruding from the back.

In current Iron Man comics, the villain Korvac, once a traitor to the human race in the future, has reemerged and seeks godlike power. His plan is to siphon off the powerful cosmic energies from the immense worldship of mighty Galactus himself, the Taa II. Tony Stark has suffered grievous injuries in his attempt to combat the threat, including suffering a broken neck (and can no longer remove his helmet as a result), but eventually decides to take the fight to Korvac with the help of War Machine, Hellcat, Spider-Man, Halcyon, Frog-Man and others in a group that he nonchalantly calls the “Space Friends.”

Korvac and his party walk through the halls of Taa II unopposed, with an exhausted and wounded Iron Man barely able to stand. War Machine helps him to his feet and the heroes gather to formulate a plan. Tony orders War Machine, Halcyon and Frog-Man to find a self-destruct mechanism. “There has to be one, knowing Galactus” muses Iron Man. Minutes later, War Machine takes flight – with Halcyon hanging on to a small handle on the back of James Rhodes’ armor. This is not the first time Marvel has treated War Machine poorly – nor is it the first time a Stark has attached a handle to the armor.

Iron Man Built A Humiliating Feature in War Machines Armor

In the pilot episode for Marvel’s What If…?, Howard Stark creates an invention usually reserved for his son – an Iron Man suit. He calls it the Hydra Stomper, and Steve Rogers (without any powers, since Peggy Carter took the serum in this universe), pilots the suit into battle – with Captain Carter holding on to a handle in the back. It should be noted that in the comics, Rhodes actually did wear the red and yellow Iron Man suit into battle in the 70s and 80s while Tony was recovering from his crippling alcohol addiction, among other issues.

Iron Man clearly put much thought into designing War Machine’s armor with many weapons and defensive features (he would want his best friend protected, after all), but a handle is just embarrassing. No doubt Stark finds it funny that Rhodes can also serve as a glorified taxi service for other heroes. Nevertheless, it does help certain non-flying heroes rush into battle, and Iron Man and War Machine’s relationship has survived much worse.
