Is Captain Marvel Powerful Enough To Resist Thanos Snap

Is Captain Marvel powerful enough to resist Thanos’ finger snap? When Brie Larson officially arrives in Captain Marvel, she debuts as the most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel is a lynchpin character – at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, she is the cavalry Nick Fury summons to hopefully save the day in Avengers 4 before he himself succumbs to the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. This naturally presumes Carol Danvers was unaffected by Thanos’ genocidal snap.

While Fury didn’t know the details of Thanos’ plan to kill half of all life in the universe, he obviously assumed Carol Danvers wasn’t affected – and was proven right by her message to his pager. Now, it’s very possible that Carol was just one of the lucky 50 percent that didn’t fade to dust, possibly because Captain Marvel’s in the Quantum Realm and protected from the snap. But could it be she was selected by the Infinity Stones, only to be so powerful she actually withstood the effects of Thanos’ snap?

The key question is what the full extent of Captain Marvel’s abilities actually are? Besides, super-strength, flight, invulnerability, and emitting energy blasts, Carol Danvers has the power to go “binary”: this means she can tap into the power of a white hole and utilize all types of energy on the electromagnetic spectrum. In fact, Carol going binary may be why her mind is damaged and her memories were wiped in her own film (or it may be the reason they are restored after someone else wiped them). It’s difficult to assess what exactly all of that means, but by applying comic book logic, it could be argued that Captain Marvel’s powers are comparable to the cosmic power of the Infinity Stones.

We definitely know it’s possible for a person to resist the effects of “The Snappening”, even if just for a few seconds. Spider-Man held on longer than his fellow heroes because he sensed the impact coming and used every ounce of his strength to fight being turned into dust. As powerful as Spider-Man is, however, he couldn’t hold off death for very long. As Captain Marvel is much more powerful than the amazing web-slinger and her abilities are cosmic, she might be able to do what Spider-Man couldn’t.

Granted, other Avengers who are considerably more powerful than Spider-Man also quickly succumbed to the finger snap. Doctor Strange had the magical power to stand toe-to-toe against Thanos while the Mad Titan wielded four Infinity Stones yet he quickly faded. Similarly, Wanda Maximoff was able to hold off Thanos and five Stones while also destroying Vision’s Mind Stone, but she also disintegrated without a fight. The key difference here, however, is that Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch were each drained from their ordeals and readily accepted their fates; Wanda had lost her love and Strange knew death was inevitable. Neither attempted to resist being turned to dust, unlike Spider-Man.

Out of all the characters left alive in the MCU, Captain Marvel is the best candidate to have been able to, somehow, resist the effects of Thanos’ snap. Of course, given the part Spidey Sense plays in Peter Parker’s case, she’d still have to have known the snap was coming and then gone binary in order to resist it. More likely, her survival was by chance and, like the six original Avengers, she was just one of the lucky 50 percent.

Even if Captain Marvel did only survive by luck, the questions of her powers in relation to the Infinity Stones remained. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor’s Stormbreaker was able to stop a blast from all six at once. Could the new hero do something similar in Avengers 4?
