Is Crockett Island Real Midnight Mass Filming Location

Midnight Mass takes place on Crockett Island, but is the island itself real? In many ways a jack of all trades, Mike Flanagan had adapted multiple horror books and stories into several movies and TV shows over the years, with him hitting his stride by partnering with Netflix. He made three films for Netflix in 2016 and 2017, but in 2018, it was The Haunting of Hill House that catapulted him forward. Because of that, audiences also got The Haunting of Bly Manor and, now, Midnight Mass.

An adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel, The Haunting of Hill House captivated viewers with its exceptional storytelling and acting, as well as its general aesthetic. It’s why people were hoping to one day check out the real Hill House, but the fact of the matter is that there isn’t a real location; Hill House was partly inspired by the Winchester Mystery House, but there isn’t an actual Hill House in Massachusetts. The same applies to Bly Manor; it may have been inspired by Lamb House, but Bly Manor itself doesn’t exist. And the same goes for Midnight Mass.

Crockett Island may exist in the world of Midnight Mass, but it’s not a real island. Given the series’ story, it’s possible it could’ve been inspired by Roanoke Island and The Lost Colony, but that hasn’t been confirmed. In reality, Midnight Mass was filmed in Garry Point Park in Richmond, British Columbia, not too far from Vancouver. Netflix and Intrepid Pictures created the town of Crockett Island in that park and filmed there throughout 2020. But while Crockett Island isn’t real, there is a Crockett Cove off the coast of Maine – the general area where Midnight Mass appears to be set when taking account the overall New England appearance.

Interestingly, the name Crockett supports the idea of the island being in Maine, perhaps where Crockett Cove is located, because most families with the surname Crockett lived in Maine throughout the 19th century. Of course, many of them migrated west during the frontier era, but that doesn’t mean an island couldn’t have been named after one of them (in Midnight Mass’ universe, that is). Furthermore, it makes sense to have a New England setting since there aren’t too many areas in the contiguous United States where there are islands like Crockett Island.

As for the filming location in British Columbia, it only makes sense that Flanagan would want to establish production there since that’s where The Haunting of Bly Manor was filmed, though The Haunting of Hill House was shot in Georgia, with the Bisham Manor serving as Hill House’s exterior look.
