Is Gary Oldmans Call Of Duty Character Reznov Still Alive

Gary Oldman’s Viktor Reznov is one of Call Of Duty’s most memorable characters, but could the crusty old Russian have survived his apparent demise? Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Medal Of Honor franchise had somewhat cornered the market in World War 2 shooters, but the arrival of the first Call Of Duty in 2003 would change that. The first few games brought historical battles to vivid life and the series would be transformed with 2007’s Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This sequel brought the franchise into the modern-day and featured superb single and multiplayer gameplay.

The rise of Call Of Duty has been unstoppable ever since, with the franchise pumping out annual blockbusters. It’s a cornerstone franchise, with names like Idris Elba, Sam Worthington, and Kit Harrington having loaned their voices to different entries. While some sequels have been met with mixed reviews, like Call Of Duty: Ghosts or Infinite Warfare, they always turn a healthy profit. The most recent installment was 2019’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, a soft reboot that featured the return of Captain Price.

Another fan favorite from the franchise is Viktor Reznov, who first appeared in Call Of Duty: World At War. Reznov is voiced by Gary Oldman and his introduction is a blatant lift from war movie Enemy At The Gates, which involves sniping enemies from a fountain while using the sounds of nearby bombing to cover the shots. Reznov was a squad leader in the Red Army and acts as a mentor to the player in World At War, with Oldman giving the character a real sense of gravitas – with a bit of hamminess too.

Is Gary Oldmans Call Of Duty Character Reznov Still Alive

He returned for 2010’s Call Of Duty: Black Ops, where lead character Alex Mason was imprisoned with Resnov in a hellish Russian prison. He and Mason form a bond but the somewhat convoluted plot sees Mason brainwashed into being a Russian sleeper agent, with Reznov ALSO brainwashing Mason into seeking revenge on their mutual enemies. Mason escapes the prison while Reznov is seemingly recaptured, but he later reappears and helps players in later levels. Mason eventually learns that Reznov was never really with him, and what he was seeing was a hallucination caused by his brainwashing.

Mason’s also told Reznov was killed during the prison break, though his death is never seen. Reznov later made a cameo in Call Of Duty: Black Ops II, as he appears before a wounded Mason following a mission gone wrong. While it’s supposed to be ambiguous as to whether its really him, the fact the figure Mason sees still has a right index finger – which Reznov is missing – means it was likely just his imagination. The character did make a comeback – sort of – with Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4.

This entry was the first to ditch a traditional story campaign, with Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 focusing on its multiplayer elements like Battle Royale mode Blackout. This mode also has a storyline set in 2043, which sees Project Blackout resurrecting dead soldiers, including Mason and old friend Frank Woods. Reznov is among this batch too, with an unlockable audio file finding Mason freaking out about seeing his old pal again. This Reznov isn’t voiced by Gary Oldman either and is instead played by Piotr Michael.

Since Blackout’s canon status is questionable, Reznov’s resurrection in this mode shouldn’t be taken too seriously. It feels like Reznov’s fate was left ambiguous just in case they wanted to bring the character back but since Call Of Duty: Black Ops II brought back Woods following his apparent death, two unlikely resurrections would be pushing it. The next Call Of Duty looks to be a soft reboot of the Black Ops series, so hopefully Reznov will be making a comeback very soon.
