A massive celestial being seems about ready to eat the Moon and Earth in Transformers: The Last Knight. Is Michael Bay finally introducing Unicron?

After the mess that was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Paramount Pictures and Michael Bay had to do right by the live-action Hasbro movie franchise with their trilogy closer. At the time, back in 2009, everyone involved was teasing how the third entry – later titled Transformers: Dark of the Moon – would go “bigger” and we immediately suggested a way to change things up and introducing the biggest Cybertronian character of them all: Unicron.
We don’t know if Unicron will appear in Transformers: The Last Knight even though we visited the set of the production this summer, but there is something in the film’s teaser trailer that offers familiar imagery that could very well be this character.
In Transformers lore, Unicron can almost be considered a god. His villainous purpose in life is simply to consume everything, and his power comes from eating stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. The origins of Unicron and his twin involve next-level sci-fi stuff, even by Transformers standards, but the character did have a major part to play in the original 1986 animated Transformers movie (voiced by Orson Welles). Sooner or later, with Paramount Pictures assembling a massive writers room of top Hollywood talent to plan out and endless series of annual Transformers films, we will meet Unicron, but it’s possible – however slim the chance may be – that this shot from the Transformers 5 teaser trailer is Unicron:
By comparison, this is Unicron from the animation, comics, etc.:
It doesn’t quite look like Unicron from the G1 era or animated iterations but as fans are well aware, many characters have had drastic alterations for Bay’s live-action take on the brand. This celestial being in the trailer is alien, massive, is built from a mix or organic material and Cybertronian-esque tech, and seems about ready to eat our moon which certain fits the bill of what Unicron is all about. It could also be some semblance of a Cybertronian world or space station, even Cybertron itself, making another play at Earth.
Speaking of Earth and why it’s at the center of interest for so many cosmic beings, the Transformers: The Last Knight teaser directly references that as well, promising an explanation. As for Unicron, don’t count on this character’s appearance just yet. There’s a lot of other story threads going on in The Last Knight which is attempting to semi-relaunch the brand by offering a fresh start for new moviegoers while also laying the groundwork for multiple Tranformers spinoffs – including 2018’s Bumblebee movie.
At this point we don’t know what this is, but it doesn’t look like something that’ll take the shape of a bipedal, horn-spouting “Lord of Chaos”.
