IT The Odd Reason Bill Skarsgards Pennywise Drools So Much

In the 2017 and 2019 movies based on Stephen King’s IT, Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise drools quite often, and there’s a behind the scenes reason why. Going into IT 2017, it’s safe to say that many fans were unsure about director Andy Muschietti’s choice of Skarsgard for the Pennywise role. While Skarsgard wasn’t an unknown, playing Pennywise was far and away his most high profile role to date, and doing so entailed dealing with the large shadow of beloved actor Tim Curry, who had given many coulrophobia with his performance in IT 1990.

Curry left behind some big, floppy clown shoes to fill, and the much younger Skarsgard was widely seen as an out of the box pic. That perception changed once the first Pennywise footage from IT was released, with fans left stunned by Skarsgard’s striking updated look and extremely creepy delivery. That’s all it took to switch fan skepticism about Skarsgard’s Pennywise into barely contained excitement over seeing the performance fully realized.

After all was said and done, most IT devotees seemed to agree that Curry and Skarsgard both gave great, albeit different, performances as Pennywise. One distinctive aspect of Skarsgard’s take was how much Pennywise is seen drooling when talking to potential victims, but that actually wasn’t the original plan.

IT: The Odd Reason Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise Drools So Much

While playing Pennywise in IT and IT Chapter Two, Bill Skarsgard wears a set of prosthetic teeth, for times when the dancing clown really needs to show off his razor-sharp chompers. The problem is, these teeth caused Skarsgard to drool, and not just a little. The teeth caused full-on torrents of slobber from the actor. While many might’ve been grossed out by this turn of events, director Andy Muschietti actually dug the effect it had on Skarsgard’s performance, feeling that it made Pennywise seem more ravenous for its prey.

With that opinion established, Muschietti decided to not only include Pennywise’s drool in the final film, but play it up. Muschietti added both practical and CGI effects to enhance Skarsgard’s real drool, leading to the sticky mess sometimes seen in IT and IT Chapter Two. Skarsgard drooling so much probably wasn’t the most enjoyable aspect of filming for his Losers’ Club co-stars, but amusingly, Skarsgard once recounted an instance where he was drooling everywhere and thought he was legitimately scaring the hell out of actor Jack Dylan Grazer, only for the kid to tell him he loved what Skarsgard as doing with the character upon Muschietti calling cut.
