There are plenty of talented surgeons in Grey’s Anatomy. However, one of the most underrated is Callie Torres, whose skills and accomplishments often go unrecognized due to the show favoring other characters.

If fans take a look at Callie’s ten-year character arc, they will find that she deserved to win the Catherine Fox award — formerly known as the Harper Avery award — long before any of her colleagues. Not only has she participated in some truly innovative surgeries, but her work and encouragement have also bolstered the careers of many others too. Her specialty may not involve scary surgeries like what Derek performed but she did change the field of medicine overall.

8 Callie Made A Man Walk Again Using Therapeutic Hypothermia

In the very early stages of Callie’s amazing character arc on Grey’s Anatomy, she made a huge step in the medical sector when she helped to make a man, who had been paralyzed in an accident, walk again (“Dream a Little Dream of Me”). She used therapeutic hypothermia to restimulate his nerves, which allowed him to regain function in his legs.

Although Derek and Mark were trying to discourage it because they thought it was too risky, fans were delighted to see Callie prove them wrong. Not only did she do excellent research and take the lead on the operation, but she also proved to the men that she was just as capable as them. Her research was certainly worth a Catherine Fox nomination, too, as this method could have also helped many patients in the future.

7 Brian Carson’s Leg Reconstruction

Callie led a team of surgeons to Bauer Army Medical Hospital to partake in another risky but groundbreaking surgery (“All Eyez On Me”). Initially, the group had been called to surgically operate on a war veteran who had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma. While the patient had to have his left leg amputated, Callie had managed to save his right one by attaching it to his chest.

Although Callie initially ran into a problem later on when she noticed the tissue on the man’s pelvis was damaged, she soon found a solution with her quick thinking and expert medical knowledge. She tried a new experimental surgery that none of the other surgeons had seen before, managing to reattach the limb. This new innovative surgery was so impressive that it was something the Bauer and Grey-Sloan surgeons promised to use again.

6 Callie Rebuilt Cartilage From Scratch

While there have been many astonishing surgeries performed on the show, many fans were amazed when Callie achieved the impossible by creating cartilage from scratch (“These Ties That Bind”). While the surgeons had discussed a possible amputation since the bones in the patient’s leg were severely damaged, the patient asked Callie if she could try and save it.

As many fans watched, they were awestruck at how quickly Callie devised a plan. She ended up replacing the damaged bones with titanium rods, creating a perfectly functioning leg. This was quite a remarkable feat and something that no other surgeon had done before, so it was a great surprise that Catherine Fox Foundation never mentioned it again.

5 Saved A Man From Losing His Fingers

Although there is a new “Ortho God” now on Grey’s Anatomy, he’s not as successful as Callie. While it is mainly the big surgeries that get the surgeons noticed for the awards, some of Callie’s smaller cases have been quite extraordinary and worthy of nominations too.

A prime example of this is how she managed to rebuild an artist’s fingers (“Put Me In, Coach”) Once she saw how much the man loved to make wood carvings, Callie refused to give up and created a brace that would allow him to maintain function in his fingers. Fans should have given Callie a lot more credit for the effort she put in because she was turning out to be quite an empowering and heroic role model on Grey’s Anatomy.

4 Fixed Derek’s Hand When No One Else Could

In the aftermath of the heartbreaking season 8 finale (“Flight”), many of the main characters were seen to have serious long-term injuries after the plane crash, including Derek. After damaging his hand, Derek was out of commission for months as no one could figure out how to fix him. Even Derek believed his career to be over. At least, that was until Callie took a look and instantly found a solution.

After assessing his nerves and the bones, Callie suggested that they graft a nerve from one of his siblings as this would help him retain function. Although Derek had been hesitant to involve his siblings, many fans were glad that he eventually went through with it as Callie not only repaired his hand but she also saved countless other lives by saving Derek’s career too.

3 Callie Created A New Ribcage By Using A 3D Printer

As the seasons progressed, the viewers saw how medical technology was advancing at a quick rate. One way that Callie and the other surgeons managed to save the lives of several patients was with the 3D printer. After Cristina managed to print the heart conduits in season 10, there were so many new and innovative surgeries, including Callie printing a new ribcage (“All I Want Is You”).

After a young girl was diagnosed with cancer, they asked Callie and Maggie for help. In the end, Callie and Maggie came up with this successful treatment plan, as it also allowed the girl to have a better quality of life.

Fans were even amazed by this operation as it was one that many thought would be impossible to pull off. This made the audience further invested in Callie’s career, as they wanted to see what else she could pull off.

2 Callie & Derek’s Brain Mapping Project

Callie and Derek’s work was going to be a breakthrough for the medical community. Together, they collaborated on a brain mapping project that would eventually lead to the creation of prosthetics that could be controlled by the brain.

It was going to change the course of medicine altogether. However, before Derek or Callie could publish their work to the work together, the President personally requested that Derek joined his team at the White House (“Get Up, Stand Up”). Although it marked the end of this partnership, fans do believe that Derek and the hospital should have given Callie some credit since it was mainly her work that put them on the map.

1 Callie & Owen’s Project For The Veterans

After Derek resigned from their project, Callie decided to join forces with Owen, where they began designing pain-free prosthetics for army veterans and heroes (“Got To Be Real”). Without Derek’s sensors, Callie had to find another way to get the prototypes to connect to the candidates’ nerves. However, she managed to solve this by tying the muscles and nerves together.

Out of all the operations and surgeries Callie had participated in, this one was the one where fans got to see the effects and results afterward. Many of the veterans who came to see her were quite happy with their new prosthetic and many of the doctors, including Owen and Jackson, were also fascinated by her work. Surprisingly, this project did not receive any nominations or recognition from the Catherine Fox foundation.
