James Gunn teases the start of production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in a new image. Gunn is currently one of the busiest filmmakers working today. Still fresh off his DCEU debut, The Suicide Squad, and its subsequent spinoff series Peacemaker, which comes to HBO Max on January 13, the director will be returning to the MCU to complete his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy while simultaneously filming a holiday special for Disney+. After having been momentarily fired from the movie back in 2018, Gunn is about to get the band back together.

Following their appearance in the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder, the Guardians will return for their third self-titled film. The regular cast includes Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis. Little else about the supporting cast is known besides Will Poulter playing Adam Warlock, with it unclear if he will act as an ally or an adversary to the Guardians.

Now, as the start of production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is quickly approaching, Gunn posts another tease to social media. The photo shows the film’s adorable production office dog, River, in the arms of costume designer Judianna Makovsky during a meeting. Though eagle-eyed fans may try to zoom in on the background to uncover details about the upcoming MCU film, Gunn made sure it was out of focus. See his post below:

Last month, a video posted to social media by Pratt led many to incorrectly assume that filming on GotG Vol. 3 had begun. Gunn later cleared up the confusion, clarifying that some of the cast are on set for rehearsals and camera tests, though they have not officially started shooting yet. Instead, principal photography is expected to begin sometime soon, giving them time for an involved post-production before the film’s release date on May 5, 2023. While Marvel recently delayed much of its Phase 4 slate, Guardians 3 held firm in its slot.

While Gunn’s post doesn’t reveal much at all about his highly-anticipated MCU movie, fans should be happy that the pre-production process appears to be humming along smoothly, which is far from a guarantee in an industry affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the possibility of an IATSE strike. For now, there isn’t reason to expect any delays on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the project is ramping up to start production sometime soon.
