Jason Momoa 8 Most Likable Characters

Though he has been in movies and television shows for quite some time now, it’s only been in the last decade or so that Jason Momoa has seen his star truly begin to rise, and he has notched leading roles in a number of significant franchises, particularly in the science fiction and fantasy genres.

Momoa is, without a doubt, one of the most charismatic actors working in Hollywood today, and he brings his powerful charm to most of his characters, most of whom, including Duncan Idaho in Dune, are very likable, even if they have to be ruthless at times.

Khal Drogo – Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Momoa brought a brooding, powerful energy to his portrayal of Khal Drogo, the powerful warlord who became the husband of Daenerys Targaryen in the first season. Though he was capable of great ruthlessness – including pouring molten gold over the head of Dany’s brother – as the season went on he showed that he was, in fact, quite likable, especially since he clearly loved her and was willing to do almost anything for her. It’s to Momoa’s credit that he managed to bring out so much of the character’s richness rather than relying simply on tired stereotypes, and his death reshaped the rest of Game of Thrones.

Aquaman – The DC Extended Universe (2016-)

Momoa’s star has continued to rise now that he has become a key part of the DC Extended Universe as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, and his movies are some of the best in Momoa’s career. Like so many other superheroes, Aquaman is a bit of a jerk at times, and he is definitely the reluctant hero, unwilling to do things until he almost absolutely has to do so. Still, in spite of all of that, there’s no question that Momoa manages to make him something more than just an antihero. Though there are times when his reluctance to do the right thing can be challenging to watch, he’s still the kind of superhero that it is impossible not to like.

Duncan Idaho – Dune (2021)

In Dune, Momoa appears as Duncan Idaho, one of the loyal retainers of House Atreides. Like many others who are part of Leto’s household, he has a powerful hatred of the Harkonnens, who tortured him when he was just a boy. As a result, there’s a slight bit of darkness that runs through Idaho’s character, and it emerges from time to time. However, he’s still a likable Dune character, not only because he is willing to do anything for House Atreides and for the Duke – even going so far as to sacrifice his life – but also because he is really quite charming and kind to those that he likes.

Ronon Dex – Stargate Atlantis (2005-2009)

Momoa has shown throughout his career that he excels at creating characters that fit in quite well with their science fiction worlds, including Ronon Dex of Stargate Atlantis.

Dex is a very likable character, in large part because he has endured so much throughout his life without giving into the darker side of his nature. Given that he was once implanted with a tracker that allowed him to be hunted for sport, that ends up being nothing less than a miracle.

Host – Saturday Night Live

Hosting Saturday Night Live is not always an easy job, and it’s very easy for even the most talented actors to find themselves somewhat at a loss when confronted with sketch comedy material. However, Jason Momoa showed that he had what it took to become one of the best hosts to emerge on the show. Momoa not only excels at the complex job of hosting – hitting all the right notes in his monologue – but also pokes fun at his own masculine persona and his performance as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, showing that he’s not afraid of making fun of himself.

Baba Voss – See

See is one of the best shows currently airing on Apple TV+, and it’s a thoughtful rumination about the nature of human society and the centrality of vision to humanity’s making sense of the world. In this world, Momoa once again portrays an epic-type hero, this time as Baba Voss, a man who will do whatever it takes to protect his family. This is the type of role that Momoa has perfected, and he has created a man who is clearly legible as a noble warrior, even as audiences like him for his fierce determination to protect those that belong to his family and to his tribe.

Declan Harp – Frontier (2016-2018)

Frontier was a historical drama series that explored a period of American history not frequently seen in television, particularly the politics and violence involved with the early fur trade. Momoa was a member of the main cast, portraying the character of Declan Harp.

Though he was capable of doing some very bad things on the road to power, Momoa managed to make this character more than just a stereotype or a straightforward villain, but instead a man driven by circumstances to do things that he might not otherwise have done.

Phillip Kopus – The Red Road (2014-2015)

Philip Kopus in the drama series The Red Road is one of Momoa’s recent roles that isn’t based on science fiction or fantasy, and this allows him to show his skills and versatility as a performer. His character, Phillip Kopus, is an ex-con who faces a very long road to redemption, particularly once his fortunes begin to intersect with both his own past and the violence surrounding him. Kopus is capable of committing murder, but he also is steadfastly loyal to his family, meaning that he is also quite likable in a contradictory way.
