Javier Bardem Praises Halle Baileys LiveAction Little Mermaid Singing

Javier Bardem praises his The Little Mermaid co-star Halle Bailey for her singing as Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action movie. The Oscar-winning actor knows talent when he sees it, having worked on acclaimed projects with major artists over the years. After making his mark in Spain, Bardem first gained international recognition for Julian Schnabel’s Before Night Falls in 2000. His star meter continued to rise with films like No Country for Old Men and Biutiful. Bardem plays King Triton in Disney’s new adaption of The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid 1989 animated film is one of Walt Disney Pictures’ most beloved properties. Speculation about a live-action version of the flick has been swirling for quite some time, with the development of the current project happening as early as 2015. Soon Rob Marshall was announced as the movie musical’s director with original composer Alan Menken back on board alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda. Halle Bailey leads the highly anticipated picture as Ariel, alongside a star-studded cast which includes: Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle. Since filming wrapped, many of the stars have been opening up about the fantastical process.

As Bardem promoted his latest project Being the Ricardos, the actor was asked about The Little Mermaid. He revealed that performing with Bailey is fairly intimidating, citing her stellar vocal chops. Bardem teased the leading lady’s prowess to ET, saying:

“[When you’re] close to Halle, it’s impossible to sing… She was warming up her voice near me, and I was like ‘What was that?’ She goes, ‘Oh, I was just warming up… It would take me five years to do that!”

It’s no surprise that Bardem is singing Bailey’s praises, as many of the film’s cast members have raved about her. Though this is the star’s first major motion picture role, her voice has been shining for quite some time. In fact, she is perhaps most known for being half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle alongside her sister Chloe Bailey. The pair have earned five Grammy Award nominations since 2018, performed at the coveted Super Bowl, and even opened for Beyoncé and Jay-Z on their On the Run II Tour.

Bardem himself isn’t known as a singer, so it’s also not shocking that he’d be nervous on that front. Audiences might get to see his musical abilities in his next film Being the Ricardos, where he channels I Love Lucy legend Desi Arnaz, though it’s unclear if the movie required him to sing. The Little Mermaid also might not force him to croon too much as Triton didn’t have any songs in the original animated film. However, if the movie takes more inspiration from the Broadway musical adaptation, fans could hear the star flex his range. Of course, in regards to The Little Mermaid, the thing that matters most is that Ariel will wow vocally with every number. The world will find out for sure when the movie splashes onto screens in 2023.
