The 355 has released a clip showing Jessica Chastain and Sebastian Stan chasing down their robbers in Paris. Taking its title from a real-life female spy who served during the American Revolution, The 355 follows an all-women spy crew that teams up to retrieve a weapon that has fallen into the hands of mercenary. Chastain takes the leading role as CIA agent Mason “Mace” Brown,” starring alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing, with Stan and Edgar Ramírez playing supporting roles. The film was originally scheduled to release in January 2021 until COVID-19 bumped the premiere to the following year. The film’s release is now set for January 7, 2022.

Chastain essentially spearheaded the making of the film, originally pitching the idea to her X-Men: Dark Phoenix director, Simon Kinberg. He eventually agreed to direct and co-write the script with Catwoman’s Theresa Rebeck. Chastain has since touted The 355 as an international spy thriller that portrays women agents as smart, complex characters, taking audiences everywhere from Paris to Shanghai as they work together to complete their mission.

From the trailer for The 355, the film appears to be as advertised, a high-octane, fast-paced action flick reminiscent of the likes of Charlie’s Angels and the Bourne franchise. Granted, the tone and storyline have potential to come across as cliché and formulaic for a spy movie, but if the formula works, there’s no reason The 355 won’t live up to expectations. With the right pacing, convoluted plot and talented cast, The 355 has all the makings of a solid thriller.

But perhaps what will be groundbreaking about The 355 is its portrayal of women. Beyond serving as simply love interests or agents who use their beauty to manipulate their adversaries, the women of The 355 appear tough, gritty and vulnerable all at the same time. And, with women involved in the production and writing of the film, audiences should be able to trust The 355 to come through with a tasteful portrayal of its characters and an accurate, perhaps even relatable, perspective of the overall female experience.
