Jigens Powers Explained Why Naruto & Sasuke Lose

How do Jigen’s powers work, and how does he use them to simultaneously defeat Naruto and Sasuke in Boruto? As the main antagonist of the Boruto anime, Jigen is as formidable as you’d expect. The leader of Kara, Jigen is merely a human vessel for Isshiki Otsutsuki, who’s plotting to permanently inhabit young Kawaki in the very near future. When Kawaki’s transport ship crashed inside Konoha borders, however, Naruto was alerted to Jigen’s schemes, and by taking Kawaki as his own adopted son, the exuberant shinobi made a clash with Jigen inevitable.

And clash they do in Boruto episode 204. Casually using Kawaki’s karma to teleport into Naruto’s living room, Jigen offers to depart quietly with the boy, but the Hokage is having none of it and a scuffle breaks out. Before Jigen can leave Naruto stranded in another dimension, Sasuke arrives and the legendary duo once again team-up to take down an Otsutsuki… but, this time, they lose.

Throughout the battle, Jigen’s main method of attack is black metal rods. Although similar to techniques used before by Pain and Madara Uchiha, this is a completely different move. All Otsutsuki characters in the Naruto franchise wield a selection of eye techniques. Most possess the Byakugan, but then there’s Kaguya’s third eye, Momoshiki’s palm Rinnegans, etc. Jigen boasts a previously unseen eye technique that allows him to shrink and restore objects at will. Like all Otsutsuki, Jigen is also capable of space-time jutsu. Combining these abilities, Jigen throws shrunken microscopic weapons stored in another dimension (i.e. sharp black rods), then regrows them the instant they hit a target, damaging his opponent from the inside.

As formidable as Jigen’s combo attack might be, it still shouldn’t trouble Naruto and Sasuke, so how do the pair lose? Firstly, neither Naruto or Sasuke are in top fighting condition thanks to many years of peace. Sitting behind a desk every day, Naruto is certainly rusty – an issue highlighted already in battles with Shin and Delta. Sasuke has kept more active than his rival, but with no major enemies to fight until lately, even his skills have dulled.

Then there’s Jigen’s immense power to consider. Although being forced to live inside a vessel means Jigen isn’t operating at full capacity, his raw strength is so great, he can easily overcome Naruto’s Nine Tails chakra and Sasuke’s Susanoo. While this might come as a surprise to viewers, Sasuke’s recent poking around reveals why Jigen is so strong. Isshiki and Kaguya Otsutsuki came to Earth as a pair, but Kaguya was actually the lesser of the two, meaning Jigen is a completely different prospect to the rabbit lady Naruto and Sasuke fought back in the day. He may not have access to his full powers at present, but Jigen’s innate strength, combined with karma powers and scientific upgrades from Amato, compensate for that.

Despite his victory, Jigen probably isn’t stronger than Naruto and Sasuke combined, at least in his current form. His win is more a triumph of tactics than outright strength. During the battle, Jigen displays detailed knowledge of Naruto and Sasuke’s respective techniques, including the Nine Tails and the Mangekyou Sharingan. Conversely, the heroes are taken aback by Jigen’s strange abilities, giving the villain a huge tactical advantage. Furthermore, Jigen’s karma nullifies almost all of Naruto and Sasuke’s best techniques, shifting the tide of battle even more in the Otsutsuki’s favor.

Naruto and Sasuke (the Hokage especially) both specialize in long battles of attrition, wearing their opponents down with a range of attacks. The cracks on Jigen’s stomach prove he couldn’t afford a protracted fight, so he relied on the element of surprise to incapacitate Naruto and Sasuke quickly. Had the battle continued any longer, the two friends would’ve seen through Jigen’s eye technique, circumvented his karma and, most likely, won the day. Knowing this, Jigen was smart to go all-out from the beginning, and this was his key to defeating Konoha’s two monsters in Boruto.
