JK Simmons Talks Shocking SpiderMan No Way Home Return

Spider-Man: No Way Home actor J.K. Simmons says he was shocked when asked to reprise his iconic role as J. Jonah Jameson in the upcoming MCU film. Arguably the most highly anticipated blockbuster of the year, No Way Home marks Tom Holland’s third solo-outing in the MCU’s iteration of the loveable Peter Parker/Spider-Man after 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. He is joined by returning castmates Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, and J.B. Smoove. The latest additions to the Spider-Man cast include Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong.

The story of the film follows Peter as he asks the Sorcerer Supreme to help make his identity as Spider-Man a secret again, which inadvertently leads to the opening of the multiverse, allowing supervillains from alternate realities to enter the MCU. Multiple villains from Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man films are set to return, along with the actors who originally portrayed them, including Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx as Electro, Thomas Haden Church as Sandman, and Rhys Ifans as Lizard. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the web-slinging superhero are also rumoured to be returning, though there has been no official confirmation as of yet.

While attending the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere in Los Angeles, JK Simmons took a brief moment to speak to Variety about his feelings on returning for the Homecoming threequel. Simmons admits that he was completely taken aback when he first got the call to return, describing what he felt as “total shock.” He also recalls his “brilliant” and “wonderful” experience making the original Spider-Man trilogy with director Sam Raimi. Total shock. Truly, initially. Then, I figured, we did the Sam Raimi trilogy. It was brilliant. It was great. It was wonderful. And then they moved on and I thought that was great. Buh-bye. And now, here I’m back.

The American actor also expresses his delight at Raimi making his MCU directorial debut with next year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Simmons’ appearance in the post-credits scene of Far From Home, where he releases Mysterio’s video exposing Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker, came to much surprise and buzz among the Marvel fanbase. This time, he plays an alternate version of J. Jonah Jameson, now the host of the well-known news outlet TheDailyBugle.net. While it appeared to be a cameo at first, the official trailers for No Way Home officially confirmed Simmons’ return in a larger capacity.

Simmons has come a long way since his role as the charismatic head of The Daily Bugle from Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy. His Academy Award win for 2014’s Whiplash is a testament to his range and showcases his versatility as an actor. Spider-Man: No Way Home will provide him with another chance to relive one of his most celebrated roles in superhero film history. To say that diehard Marvel fans will be looking forward to seeing the returning fan-favourite character would be an understatement.
