What would JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure be without DIO? Sworn archenemy to the Joestar family, he’s much more than an ordinary antagonist. With an oversized personality, a sense of style second to none, and the ability to stop time, he’s a force to be reckoned with.

He’s also become a huge fan favorite. Dio Brando was born in terrible circumstances, and his childhood wasn’t what anyone would call happy. While his quest for world domination has had its ups and downs, there are certainly many upsides to being DIO.

10 His Stand The World Lets Him Manipulate Any Situation

Being able to stop time with The World is a distinct advantage in most situations—certainly, the kinds of circumstances that DIO tends to create for himself. He’s fully in possession of his Stand by the time he’s locked in a battle in Cairo with Joseph Joestar and Kakyoin. DIO’s The World Stand is able to avoid Kakyoin’s Emerald Splashes and get across a barrier by stopping time. It’s only for a few seconds, but long enough to add to his feeling of invulnerability.

9 With “The Devil’s Own Luck,” He Avoids Arrest By Becoming A Vampire

True to form, Dio Brando never backs down from a fight. Jonathan is about to turn him in, so Dio first turns to subterfuge, pretending to be sorry and wanting to make amends for that whole attempted poisoning episode. When his lies all come to light, though, as the man who sold him the poison remarks, he was “born with the devil’s own luck.” Dio escapes the consequences by throwing his humanity out the window, and using the Stone Mask to go full vampire.

8 He Has Zombie Minions To Do His Bidding

Once Dio becomes a vampire, his path to world domination becomes easier because he can create/recruit a legion of zombies to help. He quickly turns Wang Chan into a zombie, then Jack the Ripper, and following that, most of the people who live in the village of Wind Knight’s Lot. That gives him the army he needs to put his plans into high gear. It also gives him a chance to flex his cruelty, which is horrific for others, but for Dio himself, definitely a perk.

7 As A Vampire, He Has Superhuman Strength, Speed And Endurance

Dio may have become a vampire to escape arrest at that moment, but the powers it gave him are immense. He has superhuman strength—he can even lift a road roller without breaking a sweat. Along with the strength, he’s got super speed, and endurance that goes well beyond human boundaries. He can walk up a wall by sheer force, and Speedwagon said he’s faster than a cheetah. Combined with his ruthless nature, it makes Dio one of the scarier antagonists in the anime world.

6 He Can Use Space Ripper Stingy Eyes

Being able to use Space Ripper Stingy Eyes (translated from Japanese literally as “Space Splitting Eyes Spiked Surprise”) is undeniably cool. When Dio uses the spectacular technique, it creates a jet of pressurized fluid that spews from each eye.

It’s not just something to see, either, its laser-like strength can cut through a stone. Whether it’s in the anime or the video games, it’s a formidable and powerful weapon. Fans have also made it into one of the most popular JoJo gifs and memes.

5 He’s Got Charisma To Spare, Even As A Depraved Vampire

A certain amount of charisma is part of the vampire lore. But, DIO seems to have much more than his share. In the anime, he’s easily able to gather followers even outside his zombie army, and assembles a large network. Among fans, the dog-burning, cruel killer who turned a woman into a vampire so she’d eat her own baby is only rivalled in popularity by Joseph Joestar himself. DIO is one of the rare beings in the universe who can revel in their own evil nature, and get others to admire him for it.

4 When He’s Bored Or Curious, He Can Create New Forms Of Undead Life

In theory, all vampires created via the Stone Mask can in turn create zombies. But, Dio is the only one who seems to display the ability. When he’s bored, he can also create creatures that are part animal and part human via Fusion, such as the Man-Faced Dog. (Sadly for this creature, it managed to quickly offend Dio, who killed it.) The Bird-Cat has the body of a bird and the head of a feline. In the spirit of experimentation, Dio ended up creating a wide variety of similar hybrid creatures.

3 He Only Needs One Body Part Remaining To Survive

After his monumental clash with Jonathan Joestar, Dio is literally left with only his head intact. That, however, is enough for him to keep going, waiting at the bottom of the ocean for a century with Jonathan’s body.

That kind of high level regeneration ability makes him nearly invincible, and only adds to his arrogant nature. With just his head, and the conveniently decapitated body of Jonathan Joestar, he can form a new and functioning body—one that was also able to produce Giorno Giovanna, one of his children.

2 He Can Even Cancel Out Hamon By Freezing His Blood

DIO’s abilities increase over time. The amount of time he can stop with his The World Stand gained a few more seconds as his neck wound healed and he assimilated to Jonathan’s body. Back before he had a Stand, he was also able to master the Vaporization Freezing Technique. It lets him selectively freeze parts of his own body, including the blood, enabling him to cancel out Hamon. The frozen skin sucks all the heat out of anyone or anything that touches it.

1 Immortality Is The Ultimate Perk

It’s true that DIO died in the end, destroyed by sunlight like many a vampire. But barring destruction of his body, he was still immortal, and he loved it, as he boasted after he thought he’d killed Jotaro Kujo: “I am immortal. I have everlasting… STAND POWER! Now there is a controvertible truth that no one on this miserable planet is stronger than me! You loathsome humans! I shall rule over your pathetic species until the end of time! Now bow before my wisdom and power!” DIO likely saw his immortality as the ultimate advantage, though in the end it wasn’t enough.
