Julie & The Phantoms May Have Secretly Revealed Julies Mom

The Netflix series Julie And The Phantoms is about Julie processing the death of her mother with the help of the ghostly members of Sunset Curve – but her mother’s connection to the band might have been shown in the very first episode. Julie first meets the friendly ghosts Alex, Reggie, and Luke when she finds a Sunset Curve demo CD in her garage, and together they form the band Julie And The Phantoms. Throughout season 1, Julie eventually comes to terms with her mother’s death, and the Phantoms finally learn to accept their own untimely demise.

A major figure in Julie And The Phantoms is Julie’s dead mom. Although she’s never shown, her presence hangs over every scene as Julie begins making music again in her mother’s old studio. The mother’s connection with the ghosts of Sunset Curve is never clear, but as Julie keeps finding the band’s memorabilia in her mother’s things, she realizes that they likely crossed paths. In Julie And The Phantoms episode 1 – and the night that Luke, Reggie, and Alex die – Sunset Curve plays the song “Now Or Never” for an audience of one. They leave for dinner and the fourth band member stays behind to flirt with Rose, the girl at the merchandise table, and avoids the fate of his fellow band members. Although the show doesn’t confirm it, it’s very likely that Julie’s mother and Rose are the same person.

The first major connection between Julie’s mother and Sunset Curve is that Julie and Flynn find one of the band’s shirts in her mom’s clothes. The shirt is identical to the one Reggie hands Rose in episode 1, right before the boys die. In addition, Julie’s garage was also Sunset Curve’s rehearsal space in the 1990’s and she finds their demo CD hidden in the garage loft. If Julie’s mother did meet Sunset Curve that fateful evening in 1995, it would explain why she had their shirt and CD in her belongings. It would also explain the coincidence that Julie’s garage was also Sunset Curve’s old rehearsal space – Netflix’s Julie And The Phantoms repeatedly draws a connection between Sunset Curve and Julie’s mom.

Another major clue that Rose is Julie’s mother is her friendship with the fourth band member, Bobby, also known as Trevor Wilson. Sunset Curve’s lead singer Luke, played by Charles Gillepsie, discovers that Bobby stole their songs and became a famous musician, changing his name to Trevor Wilson. Julie tells the Phantoms that Trevor was a close friend of her mother’s and she grew up talking to Trevor about music. If Rose and Trevor met the same night his bandmates died, it makes sense that they would become close after that traumatic event and remain friends until her own mysterious death. After finding the shirt, Julie begins to think her mother sent the Phantoms to help her accept her mother’s death, and suspects that she may have had a deeper connection to the ghostly musicians.

Julie And The Phantoms drops hints about the identity of Julie’s mother but never confirms who she is. There are too many connections between Julie and the Phantoms for it to be a coincidence; between finding their shirt, living in their old rehearsal space, and Julie’s relationship to Trevor it seems likely that Rose must be Julie’s mom. While the show never confirms that Rose and Julie’s mother are the same person, if Netflix orders season 2 of the show, Julie And The Phantoms might finally reveal her identity.
