Justice League Dark Detective Chimps Origins & Powers Explained

Younger DC Comics fans may not be aware, but DC is short for “Detective Comics”, and rightly so. The eponymous series has been the home of Batman, the World’s Greatest Detective, since 1940. The publisher also features a strong second-string of gumshoes. Characters such as Vic “The Question” Sage, Ralph “Elongated Man” Dibney, and Jim “The Spectre” Corrigan have all solved their fair share of mysteries over the years. Yet, one of DC’s greatest detectives is also one that casual readers may not be familiar with: Justice League Dark’s primate super-sleuth, Detective Chimp.

Justice League Dark Detective Chimps Origins & Powers Explained

Detective Chimp, aka Bobo T. Chimpanzee, first appeared in 1952’s Rex the Wonder Dog #4. When petting zoo owner Fred Thorpe is found dead inside his Florida home, the local sheriff must rely on the crime’s only witness, a trained chimpanzee named Bobo, to help solve the murder. Bobo catches the man who killed his owner and later becomes an Oskaloosa County deputy. Detective Chimp enjoyed back-up feature status in Rex the Wonder Dog until the series was canceled in 1959. For the twenty-two years that followed, Bobo disappeared without a trace.

Detective Chimp was created by John Broom and Carmine Infantino. Broom would go on to conceive such characters as Hal Jordan and The Phantom Stranger, while Infantino would originate Barry Allen and Deadman, among others. In 1971, Infantino was named DC Comics’ publisher and would eventually be inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. With comic book legends as originators, it’s surprising that Bobo T. Chimpanzee wouldn’t make another appearance until 1981 – eleven years after Broom’s retirement, and five years after Infantino had been replaced.

As originally depicted, Bobo is a common chimpanzee of slightly above-average intellect. Throughout his forty-two appearances in Rex the Wonder Dog, Detective Chimp exhibits no extraordinary powers and is still unable to talk. Both DC Comics Presents #35 and Day of Vengeance #4 attribute his inexplicable evolution to inadvertently drinking from Ponce de Leon’s fabled Fountain of Youth. Bobo exhibits enhanced intelligence, Batman-level detective skills, and is capable of speaking to any animal or human in their native tongue. He is an expert in magic and the occult and is immortal.

The Return of Detective Chimp

In 1981, twenty-two years after his last appearance, a short feature entitled, “Whatever Happened to Rex the Wonder Dog?” rounded out DC Comics Presents #35 and marked the return of Detective Chimp. This, and a brief cameo in Crisis on Infinite Earths #11, was enough to revive the character, and Bobo again began appearing in DC Comics publications. So where was he in the meantime? Day of Vengeance #4 explains that, after gaining his powers, Bobo opened his own detective agency. Sadly, with no legal standing as a person, he was unable to force clients to pay their bills. Detective Chimp’s business went under and he moved into the Oblivion Bar, an extra-dimensional watering hole for magic-types, where he admittedly “spent most of the next fifty years as a drunk.”

After playing major roles in Day of Vengeance, Shadowpact, and the Infinite Crisis crossover series, Detective Chimp has seen a major resurgence in popularity. Currently, Bobo is a permanent member of Justice League Dark, a team of magical characters who handle supernatural phenomena. Detective Chimp is the perfect example of a lesser-known character that deserved to be revisited. With DC Comics’ rich history of private eyes, certainly, there must be other characters that deserve the same second chance. When it comes to comic book detectives, DC doesn’t monkey around.
