Justice League Darks Greatest Battle Defeated EVIL Itself

DC’s Justice League Dark is accustomed to battling the darkness that creeps from the shadows of the world. But nothing can prepare them for one of their greatest battles yet, against the manifestation of humanity’s evil.

Officially speaking, the heroes of Justice League Dark is a branch of the Justice League specifically tasked with eradicating mystical and supernatural threats. Since the dawn of the team’s creation, the Justice League Dark has faced some of DC’s greatest threats, visiting the realm of Heaven as well as the realm of Hell. But even if its ranks are filled with some of the most magically gifted heroes comics have to offer, no amount of magic will be enough to defeat a villain who stands apart… as the manifestation of all of humanity’s evil.

In DeMatteis and Janín’s Forever Evil: Blight, after the Crime Syndicate lays waste to Earth and the three Justice Leagues, a seed of evil is planted inside of a man named Chris Esperanza who is brought back to life by his friend The Phantom Stranger. Because Forever Evil: Blight is a part of DC’s New 52 reboot, The Phantom Stranger gets a re-imagining: in addition to having supernatural abilities (like the ability to bring people back to life), he appears to actually be Judas Iscariot. That’s right, the Bible character who carries the guilt of killing God’s son, Jesus Christ. Even though he brings Chris back to life, all magic has a price to pay. Chris’ inner turmoil after his revival causes the evil of humanity’s collective unconscious to gain power and manifest in the material world. After taking possession of Chris, the evil being claims itself to be Blight, a darkness that will consume the world.

After multiple battles and numerous sacrifices, the Justice League Dark loses hope. But after meeting with The Voice Of God in Heaven-courtesy of a portal that The Phantom Stranger creates-the team discovers they have the strength alone to defeat the pure evil. When they return back to Earth and take on Blight, Pandora-a woman who is cursed to walk the Earth with the guilt of opening Pandora’s Box and unleashing evil into the world-she discovers she’s the physical embodiment of light. Although she appears to be a match for Blight, her strength is not enough to defeat him. Leading, to her sudden demise along with Zauriel and The Phantom Stranger. But as Swamp Thing, Constantine, Nightmare Nurse, and Deadman fight Blight in the material world, The Phantom Stranger, Pandora, and Zauriel respawn in the collective unconscious and see Chris Esperanza, the heart of Blight. Rather than striking the heart, the trio awaken Chris and give birth to something else entirely. Chris wakes from his slumber, banishes Blight to the collective unconscious, and becomes the spirit embodiment of Redemption.

Even if the cynical John Constantine believes there is no light inside of him, it’s the light inside all of the Justice League Dark that’s enough to hold Blight at bay and redeem Chris Esperanza from being pure evil.
