New fan art reimagines the DC Extended Universe’s Justice League as part of a Leonardo da Vinci painting. Compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DCEU is a newer film series, kicking off in 2013 with Man of Steel. However, the Justice League didn’t fully come together until the 2017 movie of the same name, directed by Zack Snyder. Unfortunately, despite the film’s hype, it was both a critical and box office disappointment. Many blame Justice League’s reshoots, which drastically changed the final movie from Snyder’s initial vision.

Those unhappy with the theatrical cut of Justice League will still get a chance to experience Snyder’s version. After an impressive fan campaign, the Snyder Cut of Justice League will release on HBO Max next year. Leading up to the announcement, Snyder took to social media to share never-before-seen images and teases about the film’s plot. He also appeared at Justice Con this past weekend, revealing a brief clip of Henry Cavill’s Superman wearing his black suit. However, the official teaser trailer for the Snyder Cut of Justice League won’t release until the DC FanDome event in August.

It makes sense that the DCEU and Justice League specifically are on people’s minds lately. Digital artist venomhology showed this recently, crafting a take on da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting. However, there are some pretty big changes, as numerous DCEU characters sub in for Jesus and his apostles. Appropriately, the whole scene takes place at Big Belly Burger, a fictional restaurant from the DC comics. It’s also been referenced often in The CW’s Arrowverse. Check out the da Vinci-inspired Justice League work below:

The sheer number of characters included in the image is impressive. It’s also neat to see heroes who haven’t interacted on screen side-by-side, such as Ben Affleck’s Batman and Zachary Levi’s Shazam. Right now, the DCEU is in a state of transition, thanks to Robert Pattinson taking over the role of Batman from Affleck, as well as James Gunn’s upcoming new take on the Suicide Squad. For that reason, it’s nice to pay homage to the current DCEU, albeit in an unconventional way.

The idea of imagining contemporary characters in a classic artwork isn’t completely new. A different artist recently created an image of the MCU’s Hulk devouring Ultron, in a recreation of Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya, and other artists have tried similar concepts before. However, this reimagining works particularly well, maintaining the spirit of the original painting, just with a Justice League spin. As the artist notes in their caption, there are more variations on the way, so fans should keep an eye out for what’s to come.
