Justice League Snyder Cut Wont Include Any WhedonShot Footage

Zack Snyder won’t use any footage shot by Joss Whedon in his Justice League. The filmmaker didn’t mince words when asked if there’s a chance that scenes he didn’t film will be included in the upcoming version of the movie releasing next year through HBO Max. It’s worth noting that Snyder finished principal photography of the movie before he had to step away from it due to a personal tragedy. That paved the way for Whedon to come in, man extensive reshoots, and assemble its final cut.

Justice League had been plagued with production woes since the beginning. Before the movie even reached filming, the script already needed to be rewritten because it was deemed too dark and Warner Bros. was cautious about what that meant considering the reception to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, its biggest issue came when the studio tapped Whedon to take over the project after Snyder’s departure. The two filmmakers have very distinct creative styles that resulted in a truncated film, made much more noticeable due to their differing aesthetics. Snyder now promises that the new version of the film will only use scenes shot by him.

Appearing on a panel for the fan-organized Justice Con, Snyder was asked about rumors that he’s using some of Whedon’s scenes in his Justice League. Expectedly, the director denied this – even going as far as saying that he’d ruin the film before using footage that he didn’t shoot himself.

“I’d destroy the movie before I use a single frame that I didn’t photograph. That is a f–king hard fact. I’d blow the f–king thing up.”

Considering the fact that he is very particular with his visuals, this isn’t surprising. Obviously, there were some bigger issues between Snyder and Whedon – especially with cast member Ray Fisher’s allegation that he was toxic on set and Kevin Smith’s information about how he talked bad of Snyder while working on the project. That said, it’s safe to assume that even if there’s no additional drama between the filmmakers, Snyder would still opt to use his shot scenes. After all, that’s the whole purpose of the HBO Max Justice League project – so he can finish his intended plan for the movie. In addition to that, there’s no reason whatsoever why he would need to use footage that he didn’t work on since he was able to initially wrap up principal photography.

In any case, the fact that Snyder is promising a teaser of some sort for his Justice League next month at DC FanDome is an indication that he has enough footage for the HBO Max project. So far, it’s unclear if the Snyder Cut will be in a movie or a series form – something that fans will also learn via the aforementioned DC exclusive convention. The question now is if Snyder will try re-assembling his team for any additional photography. There were belated reports this wouldn’t happen and Snyder was mum about it when asked at Justice Con. However, given the fact that HBO Max and Warner Bros. already committed to making Snyder’s Justice League happen, it doesn’t make sense for them to hinder any additional work he wants to do if it’s for the betterment of the project.
