Justice League The Snyder Cuts New God Granny Goodness Explained

Granny Goodness will appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but who is this elderly villain? With the movie’s March 18th HBO Max debut barely over a month away, it seems that not a day goes by now without some new revelation about what’s hidden in the long-awaited Snyder Cut, and the already high anticipation for it seeing a commensurate rise. A recent snippet from the upcoming second trailer revealed that Granny Goodness is in the film, with Snyder later confirming her presence.

Considering that there’s never been any casting news for Granny Goodness in the Snyder Cut, this caught fans off guard nearly as much as Snyder’s revelation of General Swanwick being a disguised Martian Manhunter. Even Darkseid and Desaad were known to respectively be played by Ray Porter and Peter Guinness long before the first trailer dropped. With the clock ticking on its impending release, the Snyder Cut remains as full of surprises as ever.

So, who exactly is Granny Goodness, and what role will she have to play in the Snyder Cut. Like her fellow New Gods seen in the film’s marketing, Granny Goodness has a long comic book history, and has also been seen in animation, live-action, and even in some video games like DC Universe Online. Her now confirmed presence raises question not only about what her role in the movie could be, but who else could theoretically be joining her. Here’s the history of Granny Goodness, and what her role could be in the Snyder Cut.

The Comic Book Origins Of Granny Goodness

Justice League The Snyder Cuts New God Granny Goodness Explained

Created by Jack Kirby, Granny Goodness was originally part of the lower class of Apokolips known as the “Lowlies”. After being pulled into Darkseid’s inner circle, she was trained to be one of his “Hounds”. Eventually, Granny Goodness became tasked with training young new soldiers for Apokolips, as well as being the leader of Darkseid’s cabal of women warriors known as the Female Furies. Among the recruits she raised was Scott Free, the son of Highfather from New Genesis, but he managed to free himself and later became Mister Miracle.

Similar to her practices on Apokolips, Granny Goodness has been tasked with overseeing orphanages on Earth with the aim of recruiting more potential soldiers for Darkseid. As a New God, Granny Goodness is essentially immortal and shares their physical strength and durability, with her name deriving from her elderly appearance. Being the leader of the Female Furies, she’s also a skilled warrior and a devoted ally of Darkseid’s.

Other Adaptations Of Granny Goodness

Granny Goodness has previously made a number of appearances outside of the comics, in both animated and live-action form. Superman: The Animated Series featured recurring appearances by Goodness, with Ed Asner providing the voice. Asner would later reprise the role on Justice League Unlimited, and Granny Goodness has appeared in numerous other animated series such as Justice League Action, Young Justice Outsiders, and Harley Quinn, with Cloris Leachman, Deborah Strang, and Jessica Walter voicing her. Granny Goodness has also been seen in several animated movies, such as Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, with Asner again voicing her, and Justice League: Gods and Monsters, where she was voiced by Khary Payton.

Granny Goodness was seen in live-action in the Superman origin series Smallville, first appearing at the end of season 9 with Nancy Amelia Bell in the role, and she was subsequently played by Christine Willes in season 10. With all of these past appearances behind her, the question now falls to what role Granny Goodness will have in the Snyder Cut. With the small snippet shown of her and, perhaps more importantly, some of the other Apokoliptian characters appearing in the film, it’s possible to hazard a guess at what her presence in the story could involve.

Granny Goodness’ Role In The Snyder Cut

With the Snyder Cut involving both the Knightmare future and very likely a glimpse at Apokolips, there’s a good chance that Granny Goodness will be seen training soldiers for Darkseid, either on Apokolips, in the Knightmare, or both. The latter in particular seems like a good bet for where she could have her greatest prominence in the film: in a dark possible future where Darkseid successfully conquered the world and brought Superman over to his side via the Anti-Life Equation. With Darkseid’s torturer Desaad also known to be present in the movie, the Knightmare could show the two of them working in tandem, with Granny Goodness acting as Darkseid’s drill sergeant and Desaad inflicting punishment on new recruits who step out of line or actively rebel.

The presence of Granny Goodness in the movie also begs the question of which other characters of Apokoliptian origin could show up, especially with how casually Snyder revealed her. The fact that Goodness is only now known to be in the Snyder Cut makes it possible that characters like Darkseid’s daughter Grail, his son Kalibak, or others could also appear. Granny Goodness’s role certainly solidifies the importance of Apokolips and the Knightmare to the film’s story.

It should be made clear that Granny Goodness is still likely to be a minor character featured in the background of the movie, especially with no casting related news. Indeed, it’s entirely possible that she’s simply been rendered entirely through CGI without even having any dialogue in the film, and was intended by Snyder during the movie’s initial production to be more fleshed out down the road. Nevertheless, the fact that Granny Goodness being seen in Snyder’s cut went from being a question mark mere days ago to now fully confirmed just shows once again how deep the rabbit hole of Zack Snyder’s Justice League really is – and who knows what else Snyder’s 4-hour epic has in store?
