Justice League What Happened To Barrys Mother

Zack Snyder’s Justice League features Barry Allen’s backstory and relationship with his incarcerated father, but it doesn’t explain what happened to Barry’s mother. The Flash received a welcome boost to his character arc in the Snyder Cut, much like Cyborg and Steppenwolf did, though his full background has yet to be explored. The Flash’s solo movie may very well delve into the tragic circumstances around his mother’s absence in the DCEU.

Barry’s father Henry is in jail for the murder of Barry’s mother Nora, which they both know he didn’t commit. Henry only appears in two scenes during the Snyder Cut, but he exists mainly to discourage Barry in his pursuit of a criminal justice degree. However, in the end, his outlook on Barry’s future changes when Barry announces that he’s gotten a real job in the Center City Police Department. In the comics, Barry eventually becomes a forensic scientist when he’s not fighting crime.

Nora Allen has various iterations in the comics, but the most well-known version of her story may be in The Flash: Rebirth arc, penned by Geoff Johns. Nora is murdered by Barry’s archnemesis Professor Zoom, or the Reverse-Flash. Both of these aliases belong to Eobard Thawne, who is the descendant of Malcolm Thawne, Barry’s twin brother who was separated at birth. Born centuries after the Flash, Eobard initially idolizes the super-speedy superhero to the point of obsession. In the Rebirth series, when they have become each others’ greatest enemies, Eobard travels back in time using Negative Speed Force to ruin Barry’s life, including killing Nora. This event is what propels Barry into pursuing a career in forensics and seeking justice for his father.

After the events of Rebirth, Barry travels back in time to prevent Nora’s death, thereby creating the Flashpoint timeline. Though he succeeds in saving her life, the alternate timeline proves to be a disaster. Bruce Wayne was shot as a child and his mother and father become Batman and the Joker, respectively. The Amazons and Atlanteans are waging war against each other. Navigating the strange new world he has wrought, Barry encounters Professor Zoom, who reminds him that Barry caused the dystopian universe. In order to save the future, Barry must return to the past to allow Zoom to kill Nora. This realization devastates Barry, but he is able to say goodbye to Nora before resetting the timeline.

This comic arc has been covered in the third season of CW’s The Flash, but elements of it may be adapted to the big screen for the Flash’s stand-alone movie. It has the potential to explore Barry’s past with Nora, establishing the film’s emotional crux, as well as bring some beloved DC characters into the fold. It can also develop depth in Bruce’s relationship with Barry, who is tasked with delivering a letter from alt-universe Thomas Wayne. A Flash movie may ultimately build upon the foundations of Barry’s past established in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and breathe new life into Nora’s character.
