Kaguyasama Raps Its Way Closer to a Confession

The following contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 5 of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, now streaming on Funimation and Crunchyroll.

Season 3 of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War reached peak absurdity in its fifth episode as the series fully committed to using hip hop and rap as a means for its characters to communicate. The series’ continuity has been stronger than ever as the burgeoning friendship between Shirogane Miyuki and Hayasaka Ai stayed in the spotlight, while Shinomiya Kaguya was as bewildered as the audience presumably was for this particular episode. Shirogane’s boldness continued to skyrocket as his heartfelt rap for Hayasaka — who he knows as Herthaka — appeared to be an indication that Shirogane is reconsidering his approach to the battle of love he is waging against Shinomiya.

The first two segments of this episode formed one overarching narrative, while the continued heartache of Shijo Maki quietly capped off one of the strongest (and strangest) episodes of Kaguya-sama to date. While Shijo refused advice from Ishigami Yu to try to come between Kashiwagi and Tsubasa’s relationship, Love Is War continued to lean into the idea that Hayasaka might be developing feelings for Shirogane — a growing disdain for Shinomiya — that might cause her to make a move on the president before Kaguya has a chance.

Chika Fujiwara Wants To Beat A Rhythm

Shirogane is still mulling over Herthaka’s (Hayasaka-in-disguise) opinion that the only way a person can be loved is to put on an act. The Student Council President wanted to tell her that she was wrong, but his feelings were so strong that he decided rapping was the only way he could do so. Cue Fujiwara Chika, as Shirogane asked his lowkey best friend for help once again because like basically everything else, Shirogane was a terrible rapper. Despite her abhorrence for Shirogane’s singing voice, Fujiwara reluctantly agreed to help after being moved by her misunderstanding that he was going to confess his love to someone. The problem, however, was that Fujiwara didn’t actually know anything about rap.

Fujiwara admitted that she assumed just adding “yo” at the end was all that was necessary to make something into a rap. However, she was so determined to help Shirogane confess his love that she insisted she’d learn all she could about rap and hip hop. Because this series is realistic with intelligent, reasonable characters, it made perfect sense that Shirogane then taught Fujiwara how to rap so that she could then teach him how to rap. Once logic was confirmed to be merely optional in Love Is War, Fujiwara successfully mastered rapping and managed to teach Shirogane how to rap as well.

Ai Hayasaka Wants To Talk

Shirogane ordinarily prefers to hide his vulnerabilities, but he decided to show his weakness to Herthaka because of how strongly he felt regarding what she said about the necessity of putting on an act in order to be loved. This new, open and honest version of Shirogane, even if he still needed to distance himself from the words by rapping them, might be an indication that he’s gearing up to set aside his pride and confess to Shinomiya. Despite his current objective being speaking with Herthaka, it was clear that he’s still very much in love with Shinomiya.

Hayasaka also seemed to value her new friendship with Shirogane. She still hasn’t told Shirogane exactly who she is, but she did tell him that she’s employed by the Shinomiya family and that her “Mr. Herthaka” disguise is necessary to keep people like Fujiwara from learning her true identity. When she was summoned by Shirogane so that he could rap his feelings to her, she was only moved to tears by the fact that Shirogane’s rapping skills had gone from torturously bad to extremely adequate. It wasn’t until Shinomiya joined in the musical festivities to criticize Hayasaka that she finally snapped and admitted that she just wanted to enjoy her life as a teenager, as her job doesn’t let her.

Season 3 has been the season of Hayasaka, who’s received more character development than almost anyone else. Working for the Shinomiya family is difficult and time-consuming, and Hayasaka admitted that she’s jealous of Shinomiya for having friends and a life. Hayasaka said she’d be happy with just one male friend — Shirogane — but at the end of the episode, implied that she wanted more than friendship with him eventually. It’s still unclear whether Hayasaka actually has feelings for Shirogane or just likes to antagonize him, but either way, Shirogane’s rap message appeared to be a turning point for the troubled teen.

Maki Shijo Wants Some Help

In the only non-rapping segment of the episode, Shijo came back to the Student Council Room in heartbroken shambles over her unrequited crush on her best friend’s boyfriend. To their credit, Shirogane and Ishigami seemed to want to help her, but the only advice they could give was the same advice neither of them can follow themselves: confess. Once again, Shijo didn’t get much helpful input and seemed to just want to vent, but if nothing else, her struggles were uncomfortably relatable for Shirogane and Ishigami. Throwing in a taunt at her “auntie” Shinomiya that Shirogane and Ishigami are her new friends, Shijo appeared to be feeling better despite being 0-2 on getting useful help from the Student Council.

Battle Result: Maki Shijo Wins

Season 3 Scoreboard: Shinomiya 4-1 / Shirogane 1-4 / Ishigami 0-1 / Fujiwara 0-1 / Iino 1-2 / Osaragi 1-0 / Kashiwagi 1-0 / Shijo 2-0 / Hayasaka 1-0
