Kang Has His Own Version of the Infinity Stones

While Marvel’s Infinity Stones are some of the universe’s most powerful artifacts, they’re not the only way for a villain like Kang the Conqueror to gain incredible power. This revelation came in 2019’s Moon Knight Annual #1 written by Cullen Bunn with art from Ibrahim Moustafa & Matt Horak. The one-shot was a part of Marvel’s Acts of Evil line, which sought to pair heroes and villains who might not normally face off against each other.

Even though they are not normally seen as foes, Moon Knight and Kang actually share a link through their connection to ancient Egypt. Kang spent time as the Egyptian Pharaoh Rama-Tut before being defeated by the Fantastic Four, while Moon Knight is the avatar of the ancient Egyptian God Khonshu. It therefore makes sense that after creating three powerful Egyptian artifacts, Kang would be opposed by Moon Knight, who has been tasked by Khonshu to stop him.

Similar to the Infinity Stones, each artifact holds a special power. Unlike the stones though, which hold sway over all of existence, the artifacts’ scope of power is limited to just time. The ankh grants the knowledge to control time, the scarab allows one to “chew through” the fabric of time, and the scepter helps to focus time. Like the stones, it appears any individual that has control over an artifact is able to use its power, as Moon Knight uses the scepter to bring multiple Moon Knights from across time to do battle with Kang at the story’s climax.

One could argue, however, that the artifacts’ potential to give Kang limitless power is even stronger than those who wield all the Infinity Stones. In the case of the stones, they were created at the birth of the universe. Any user of the stones is merely tapping into that power, and each is actually part of a circuit that only reaches full power when they’re all joined together. The artifacts, however, were created by Kang himself in his days as Rama-Tut, a self-proclaimed master of time. Kang’s connection to these artifacts is personal, and in trying to attain them later in his personal timeline, it’s clear they’re the peak of his craft and power.

The story concludes with the first Moon Knight from Mesopotamia taking the artifacts, hiding them in a pocket of time Kang can never access. This original Moon Knight is cursed to be forever cut off from Khonshu, allowing a spell such that the Knight and Kang will never exist in the same moment again. Perhaps one day fans will see a follow-up as Kang makes an attempt to retrieve his personal version of the Infinity Stones, though MCU fans will be hoping that the movies don’t use the ankh, scarab, and scepter to make his personal mission too similar to that of Thanos.
