It’s taken quite some time, but Pokémon is finally doing something to help players with Hidden Abilities. First introduced in the series’ fifth generation, Hidden Abilities are special Abilities that can be unlocked through various methods throughout the games. Often, these methods are fairly obscure, or only available for a limited time, and require players to grind for a small percentage chance to find a certain Pokémon with their respective Hidden Ability. It was an incredibly unnecessary system and Game Freak is finally doing something about it in the next big Pokémon update.

The change to Hidden Abilities represents the most recent in a long line of evolutions of convenience for the franchise. In the last few generations of main series games, Game Freak has made a concerted effort to streamline a lot of the grinding as it relates to Pokémon’s competitive scene. Breeding for the proper Pokémon to build a competitive team was a grueling process, and it’s become significantly quicker as things like passing down egg moves, IV breeding, and EV training have all been made more convenient. Hidden Abilities now join that list.

With the upcoming release of Pokémon Sword & Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion, a new item called the Ability Patch is being introduced. Players will be able to use the Ability Patch to change a Pokémon’s Ability to its Hidden Ability (if it has one). This item will not allow a Pokémon to retroactively change its Ability back to a regular Ability, but it’s likely that the Ability Capsule that currently exists in the game will be able to do that. So once The Crown Tundra expansion releases in October, Pokémon will finally have the freedom to change all of their Abilities at any time.

Why the Ability Patch is a Great Addition to Pokémon

New item discovered! Ability Patches are hard to come by but worth the effort. If you use one on a Pokémon, its Ability will change to its species’ Hidden Ability, if it has one! https://t.co/FuK8d0Btax pic.twitter.com/Fu2AQcur3p

The impact of the Ability Patch’s introduction to Pokémon cannot be understated. Often, when preparing to breed a competitive Pokémon, players have to either work out a trade with someone else or go out into the wild and grind out a low percentage Pokémon just to begin the process of breeding. Now, with the Ability Patch, players can simply breed the Pokémon they want and then change their Ability after acquiring whatever particular currency is required to obtain the item. The introduction of the Ability Patch also helps players who invest hours upon hours into hunting shiny Pokémon, only to then see that their long desired Pokémon doesn’t have the correct ability and they have to start the process over.

The change to Hidden Abilities is a mechanic that’s long overdue. Hidden Abilities never should have been as annoying to get as they were, but they became too big of a staple to the series’ competitive scene and they desperately needed a change like this. The competitive scene will see a drastic shift from this change not just for team building convenience, but also because new Ability and moveset combinations will become available to certain Pokémon. And for players who like to hunt shiny Pokémon, spending countless hours finding shinies with the wrong Ability is going to be a thing of the past. There’s certainly a segment of fans that dislikes how easy it has become to acquire the exact Pokémon players are looking for, but it was a needlessly long and tedious process that desperately needed this sort of change.
