My Hero Academias Version of Joker is Also Their Lex Luthor

There are many My Hero Academia characters that parallel famous heroes and villains from American comics, but perhaps the most interesting is when two very different characters are blended into one–as is the case with Re-Destro and his fusion of Joker and Lex Luthor.

Re-Destro, also known as Rikiya Yotsubashi, is the CEO of a major company called Detnerat, which develops support items that help people to better control and use their quirks. While support items have primarily been seen developed for and used by licensed heroes, there are other varieties of support items that can be used by civilians, mostly to control and limit accidental activation. This isn’t quite the case for Detnerat, however. Rikiya is secretly the leader of the Meta Liberation Army, a villainous group who believes that freely using quirks is a human right, and that these laws restricting quirk use to heroes alone are an unjust infringement on that right. While Detnerat operates legally, producing custom support items to meet their clients’ demands, Rikiya is also using the Meta Liberation Army to invoke change in society towards the treatment of quirks. Surely, it’s a coincidence that more quirk use would also equal more demand for support items.

For a criminal mastermind running a perfectly legal company right in front of everyone’s eyes, the obvious comparison in Western comics would be Lex Luthor, although there’s no shortage of other millionaire villains, such as Norman Osborne. But Rikiya and Lex share one other important thing in common: they both have a firm ideology that they believe in, and they’re confident that this ideology is what’s best for the world. While their actions may be villainous, the underlying motive is sincere. Re-Destro also bears some resemblance to another major DC villain, the Joker, as he’s prone to mood swings that can change on a dime, and he’s actively interested in tearing down society by highlighting the flaws and absurdity in its everyday operation.

In terms of superpowers, Rikiya’s quirk Stress actually makes him more similar to the Hulk, as he transforms into a monstrous, muscular form when placed under pressure. This actually does inform his beliefs, though: for someone with a quirk like Stress, which could easily activate in normal life circumstances against his will, quirk use isn’t a choice. It’s simply a fact of life for him, and to pretend that everyone is still an ordinary human like before the advent of quirks is to deny reality. And this philosophy has been in his family for decades, first professed by his ancestor Chikara, better known as the pro-quirk villain Destro. Rikiya’s own villain name Re-Destro is, of course, a reference to his predecessor, and a declaration of intent to carry on these beliefs.

Re-Destro also made an interesting villain in that he’s first shown going up against Tomura Shigaraki and the League of Villains, providing a villain versus villain battle that culminates in Re-Destro’s defeat at Shigaraki’s hands. The League of Villains and Re-Destro’s Meta Liberation Army end up merging together into the Paranormal Liberation Front, an organization with the power to actually start invoking change in society. All this leads into the massive conflict known as the Paranormal Liberation War, what is undoubtedly the most significant event in the entire story and what will be the prime subject of the anime’s sixth season. While Re-Destro’s time in the spotlight is fairly brief, there are few villains who’ve had a greater impact on My Hero Academia history than Rikiya.
