Kang Was Considered To Mess With Timeline In Early Eternals Movie Script

In a new interview with Eternals screenwriters Kaz and Ryan Firpo, it was revealed that Kang the Conquerer was once in talks to appear in the film. Eternals arrived in theaters on Nov. 5th, and marks the third cinematic installment in the MCU’s Phase 4. It follows a group of powerful celestial beings as they face off against one of Earth’s biggest threats; the Deviants. In addition to directing the film, Chloé Zhao also co-wrote Eternals along with the Firpos and Patrick Burleigh.

Kaz and Ryan are two relatively unknown screenwriters who also happen to double as cousins. The duo landed perhaps one of the most sought-after gigs after pitching an Eternals script to Marvel back in 2018, which was quickly picked up the studio. Zhao, a self-proclaimed fan of the MCU, was on the shortlist to direct the film, and landed the job that same year. According to the Firpos, there were plenty of things that didn’t quite make it into the final script, like a story that featured 12 Eternals as opposed to 10. One of Kaz and Ryan’s early scripts included Eternals Zuras and Valkan, but the characters were later cut.

Surprisingly, Zuras and Valkan weren’t the only characters who didn’t make it into the final script. While speaking on The Playlist Podcast, the Firpos revealed that Kang was considered to appear in Eternals in early versions of the script. Ryan admitted to being “really fascinated” by the character after his shocking introduction in Loki, and thought bringing Kang into Eternals could pertain to the movie’s overarching themes of immortality. Ultimately, Kaz and Ryan agreed to steer away from the idea, choosing to focus on the story’s main antagonists—the Deviants—instead. Ryan’s full quote can be read below:

“I would say that I was introduced to Kang through my research into the Eternals, and I was really fascinated by him and obviously, [Michael] Waldron and Loki have brought him to life in a really exciting way. He was also somebody where I was like, ‘This could be cool.’ Especially because we’re dealing with immortality. There were even versions in the pitch where we were thinking that Kang could have gotten involved and sort of messed up the Eternals timeline a little bit. But then, you know, we kinda steered away from that. He was somebody I was really fascinated by.”

Though he may not have appeared in Eternals, there’s no doubt that Kang is about to play a huge role in the MCU. As explained by Ryan, Kang made his grand debut in Disney+’s Loki show earlier this year, and Johnathan Majors certainly gave a memorable performance. Kang has the potential to be one of Marvel’s most daunting villains to date, especially after the multiverse descended into chaos after seizing control of the Time Variance Authority in the Loki season 1 finale. Last December, it was also confirmed that Majors will be playing Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and will act as the film’s main antagonist. So while the Kang variant viewers met in Loki was portrayed as somewhat morally gray, fans are sure to see the character as a full-blown villain in the upcoming Ant-Man movie.

An Eternals sequel could happen at Marvel, with Kaz and Ryan already teasing the addition of popular comic book characters like Galactus. There’s a long way to go until Eternals 2 sees the light of day, but it’ll be interesting to see if any of the Eternals will make an appearance in upcoming MCU projects before then. As for Kang, fans are hoping to see him before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premieres in 2023. Either way, Kang is on track to become Marvel’s next Thanos-level threat, and it’s only a matter of time before he makes his next on-screen appearance.
