Kevin Feige Reveals Jon Favreaus Most Important Change To An MCU Movie

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Marvel head Kevin Feige reveals Jon Favreau’s most important change to a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie came in his character’s fate Iron Man 3. Favreau not only helped launch the MCU as the director of the first two Iron Man films but also co-starred in both as Harold “Happy” Hogan, Tony Stark’s bodyguard and close friend as the tech billionaire became the world-saving hero. The MCU threequel saw Happy now serving as head of security for Stark Industries while Tony largely became a recluse in the wake of the New York battle against the Chitauri in The Avengers.

Following Tony’s passing in Avengers: Endgame, Happy would go on to be the head of Asset Management for the Avengers and serves as a mentor to young Peter Parker. Happy first held a brief appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming before getting larger supporting roles in Spider-Man: Far From Home and the newly released No Way Home, the latter of the two which saw him romantically attached to Peter’s Aunt May. Despite going on to serve as Peter’s new mentor, it appears this wasn’t always the plan for Happy’s future in the MCU.

In a red carpet interview for Spider-Man: No Way Home (via ComicBook.com), Kevin Feige opened up about Jon Favreau’s importance to the MCU. Feige specifically recalled a note Favreau gave for his character’s appearance in Iron Man 3 that resulted in the most important change to his MCU future and how appreciative he was for it. See what Feige said below:

“There was a little difference in the script than the final movie, which was that Happy died. Jon had a note — that is one of the most important notes he gave us at Marvel — which was, ‘What if Happy was severely injured but did not die?’ I’ve said this many times, the MCU would not be what it is without Mr. Favreau at all. Obviously Iron Man, obviously everything there, but staying the heart and soul of Happy Hogan is what’s really amazing.”

Iron Man 3 marked an interesting shift in tones and character arcs for the MCU, but most notably marked as the start of Happy being put through the ringer with his various appearances. Spider-Man: Homecoming saw him consistently pestered by Tom Holland’s young webslinger to be included more in Avengers-level missions while Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame saw him forced to grapple with the effects of Thanos’ devastating snap and the loss of his best friend Tony as he sacrificed himself to save the world from the Mad Titan. While Spider-Man: Far From Home did see Happy get to enjoy some of his life by dating Aunt May, he still was forced to face off against Mysterio and his army of killer drones.

Spider-Man: No Way Home saw his biggest struggle yet as he not only was dumped by May at the start of the film, but subsequently had to see her die following Peter’s battle with the Green Goblin and later have his memory erased of his relationship with Parker. Though his involvement in the MCU at the time of Iron Man 3 and his newfound creative role in the Star Wars universe could’ve seen audiences accept Happy’s death in the former, audiences are certainly as grateful as Feige is for Favreau making a note to keep his character alive. With plenty more to come from the MCU, it will be interesting to see where Happy pops up next.
