KickAss 3 Chloë Grace Moretz Wants To Return As HitGirl

Chloë Grace Moretz is open to reprising her role as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 3. Based on the Mark Millar comic of the same name, Kick-Ass was a 2010 superhero movie directed by Matthew Vaughn focusing on Dave Lizewski (Aaron-Taylor Johnson) who attempts to become a real-life superhero and gets himself caught in a massive between crime bosses and other masked vigilante’s. The breakout star of Kick-Ass was Moretz, who was only 13 when the film was released, as she played the violent foul-mouthed assassin Hit-Girl.

Kick-Ass was released in April 2010 and went on to gross $98 million at the worldwide box office and was a hit with critics. A sequel, Kick-Ass 2, was released in 2013 with Jeff Wadlow in the director’s seat. Kick-Ass 2 underperformed at the box-office, grossing $60.8 million worldwide and was panned by critics, although it did have some fans as Quentin Tarantino put it in his top 10 films of 2013. Since the release of the sequel, there have been talks about continuing the Kick-Ass story either as a prequel, a sequel, or a reboot but nothing has ever materialized. Mark Millar recently said there are no plans for a Kick-Ass 3 and that the topic is only ever brought up when the actors are asked about it on talk shows.

Fittingly, a Kick-Ass star appearing on a talk show led to a question about Kick-Ass 3. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the talk show host asked Moretz about the status of a Kick-Ass 3 and if she would return for the role. Moretz said she is open to reprising her role and picking up with Hit-Girl years later as an adult seeing what she is up to. She did however say that she would like for everyone to return, including the original stars Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse along with the crew, likely original director Matthew Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman.

“I would love to do a Kick-Ass 3 I think it would be really fun to see where Hit-Girl goes and what she is like as an adult. I think it would have to be kind of perfect. I think it would need to be across the board Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse and the whole crew back together.”

Since the release of Kick-Ass, the creative team behind the original film has moved on to a number of other projects. Vaughn quickly followed Kick-Ass up with X-Men: First Class and then moved on to Kingsman, another adaptation of a Mark Millar comic, with the third entry in the franchise the prequel The King’s Man set to open in theaters this Christmas. Aaron-Taylor Johnson moved from one superhero project to another as he starred as Quicksilver in the MCU and is set to play Kraven the Hunter in the upcoming Sony Pictures film based on the character. Screenwriter Jane Goldman reteamed with Vaughn on X-Men: First Class and the first two Kingsman films as well as The Woman in Black, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and the upcoming remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Back in 2018, Moretz seemed to imply she would not want to return as Hit-Girl given the bad reaction to Kick-Ass 2, but it appears her mindset has changed and she possibly misses the role and the people she worked with. It has been eleven years since the release of the original Kick-Ass, and while never a box office sensation that other comic book franchises were, the series did have a strong cult following. A sequel set years later could scratch a nostalgic itch for the film series, and allow the filmmakers to comment on how much the superhero media landscape has changed. Given the popularity of Hit-Girl, and the fact that Mark Millar is still making comics based around the character there is a lot of potentials to explore be it in a reboot with a new actress, or with Moretz reprising her role in a long-awaited Kick-Ass 3.
