King in Black XMen Get Venomized in New Preview

Marvel Comics’ King in Black crossover event has permeated every corner of the Marvel Universe, as Knull the Symbiote God has finally begun his conquest of Earth, overrunning its heroes and forcibly converting many to his side. This includes the X-Men, who arrived from their mutant nation of Krakoa to lend a hand in the planet’s defense alongside the rest of the Marvel’s superheroes, only to be Venom-ized/Knullified as a result. A new preview for King in Black: Marauders reveals the dark new Venom-ized looks for the X-Men under Knull’s control.

In previous issues of King in Black, Knull not only had legions of symbiotes in the form of dragons under his command, but he also had a group of Celestials bonded to his control as well. Despite Earth’s defenders being prepared for his arrival and having some of their strongest defenses at the ready, it wasn’t enough. By the end of the first issue, Knull had covered the entire world in a symbiote dome, and several Marvel heroes were overwhelmed, forcibly bonded to Knull and becoming assimilated into his hive-mind.

Both Cyclops and Storm of the X-Men were among the fallen heroes, and it looks as though the Marauders led by the Red Queen Kate Pryde will be coming face to face with the corrupted and Venom-ized mutants that were once their friends. While Cyclops had been working alongside Captain America and his ground forces until they were all drowned in a sea of symbiotes, Storm had been airborne combating Knull’s dragons. Storm was actually holding her own better than most, but the seemingly infinite number of symbiotes soon became too much. Here’s the preview and synopsis for King in Black: Marauders #1 from writer Gerry Duggan with art by Luke Ross:

As the preview image shows, not only were several heroes such as Cyclops and Storm turned into hosts for Knull, but Venom himself was killed during the first attack, as Knull ripped Eddie Brock’s symbiote off of his body before throwing him from a great height. While surviving heroes and leaders like Iron Man and Reed Richards believed Venom to be their best chance at fighting Knull and getting their people back, Eddie’s death has forced them to look at other options (and Brock’s son may hold the key).

However, it seem as though the Marauders will be working on a smaller scale in King in Black, looking to help whoever they can in the chaos that has unfolded, especially since it’s their own friends and teammates doing the damage. Sadly, being Venom-ized is especially bad for Marvel’s mutants; Krakoa’s resurrection protocols allow mutants to return from death, but only if they’re confirmed to be deceased. For Cyclops’ team, it’s worse to be held in Knull’s thrall than to simply have been killed, since the latter circumstance would have allowed them to rejoin the fight. This sets up the possibility that Kate’s mission may actually be not to free her fellow X-Men, but to put them down for the good for everyone. Readers can check out King in Black: Marauders #1 on February 3.
