Out of 34 revealed fighters for The King of Fighters XV, 32 are series veterans. These are all the returning characters in KOF 15 so far.

The King of Fighters XV’s cast features many returning fan favorite characters. The game’s roster will include 39 characters at launch, 34 of whom have been revealed so far. Two DLC packs have also been confirmed, each including on team of three characters. This brings the grand total up to 45 characters if no additional DLC is distributed.
The King of Fighters 15 is slated to release on February 17, 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows 10, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The game follows in The King of Fighters XIV’s footsteps as the second game in the series to be in 3D. Unlike its predecessor, however, which introduced many new characters, King of Fighters 15 seems to be doing the opposite, with only two new characters, Isla and Dolores, revealed for KOF 15 so far.
This leaves 32 of the announced cast as returning characters from a wide variety of past King of Fighters games. While many are classic characters who have been in most or all King of Fighters games, others are newer and continue the story started in KOF 14. The two new characters so far are both in Team Rival, leaving the rest of the roster to fill out the different competing teams. Four of these characters haven’t been assigned a team just yet, and it’s up in the air if the remaining five launch characters and six DLC characters will be new or returning. But the King of Fighters XV’s website describes the game’s story as “an explosive climax” as heroes from the three previous sagas join in the KOF tournament this time around, meaning there may be even more series veterans revealed later.
Characters In King Of Fighters 15 Returning From KOF 14
KOF 15’s Team Hero includes Shun’ei and Meitenkun, returning from KOF 14. They find themselves at the center of The King of Fighters 15’s story, but not with Tung Fu Rue like in KOF 14. In fact, the Team Story for Team Hero implies Tung Fu Rue won’t be returning, as he states he has no interest in joining the KOF tournament. Instead, Luong returns from KOF 14 as a member of Team Secret Agent. Team G.A.W. or Galaxy Anton Wrestling also features King of Dinosaurs, who was in KOF 14’s Mexico Team. Also part of the team is KOF 14’s host, Antonov himself, who sports a major redesign this time around, seemingly inspired by the late WWE wrestler “Macho Man” Randy Savage. KOF 15 also sees the return of the hooded figure Kukri, although he hasn’t been assigned a team just yet.
NESTS Saga And Ash Saga Characters Returning In KOF 15
The NESTS Saga storyline took place during the events of The King of Fighters ’99, 2000, and 2001. The main protagonist of the saga, K’, has been confirmed as a returning fighter recently, but the team he will be on is still unknown. Ramón and Vanessa, who were teammates with K’ in KOF 2000’s Hero Team are also slated to reappear, but they’ve all been assigned to different teams. Ramón is the final member of Team G.A.W. with Antonov and King of Dinosaurs, while Vanessa joins Luong in Team Secret Agent. The final NESTS Saga character joining The King of Fighters XV and most recent character reveal so far is Whip.
When the King of Fighters games changed their naming system, the Ash Saga was ongoing. The King of Fighters 2003, XI, and XIII feature the unheroic protagonist Ash Crimson, as does XII, although KOF 12 doesn’t have a canonical storyline. Ash wasn’t in 14, but he’s returning in The King of Fighters XV. So far, he’s the only character revealed to be returning from his storyline, but the launch roster of 39 fighters divides neatly into 13 teams of three. Ash likely won’t be flying solo in King of Fighters 15, and there’s a chance some of the remaining five fighters may originate from the Ash Saga and team up with him.
King Of Fighters XV: Returning Teams
Because of the high number of returning characters in KOF 15, most teams comprise only of veteran fighters. The Ikari Warriors Team, now called Team Ikari, returns in King of Fighters 15 exactly as it was in King of Fighters XIV, featuring Leona Heidern, Ralf Jones, and Clark Still. All three originate from earlier KOF titles, with Ralf and Clark from the first entry in the series, ’94, and Leona not much later with ’96.
Series staple Team Super Heroine also returns, featuring fan favorites Athena Asamiya, Mai Shiranui, and Yuri Sakazaki. King, who is oftentimes featured in this female fighters team, is now part of Team Art of Fighting, another team she usually shifts between. Named after the early 90’s Neo-Geo series where these characters originated from, King is joined by its lead characters Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia as her teammates.
Another group named after the game its fighters come from is Team Fatal Fury. The team includes the iconic Terry Bogard, his younger brother Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi. Terry, the character so well loved he made it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC, will also have a DLC costume based on his Garou: Mark of the Wolves outfit available in King of Fighters XV as an early purchase bonus.
Additional veterans come in Team Orochi, who appeared in KOF ’97 as three of the Four Heavenly Kings of the game’s main antagonist. Yashiro Nanakaze, Shermie, and Chris all return in King of Fighters XV as something begins to interfere with the seal placed over Orochi. The descendants of the three clans who sealed Orochi nearly 2,000 years ago are classic protagonist Kyo Kusanagi, his rival Iori Yagami, and Chizuru Kagura, who returns in KOF 15 after a long hiatus due to not having any plot relevance. Now that circumstances have changed, Chizuru makes her anticipated return with Kyo and Iori as Team Sacred Treasures.
King Of Fighters XV: Remaining Returning Characters
The remaining King of Fighters XV characters revealed thus far fill out the remaining teams. Heidern, the adoptive father of Leona, joins newcomers Isla and Dolores as part of Team Rival. Team Secret Agent is capped off with Blue Mary. And finally, Benimaru Nikaido once again joins Team Hero which, depending on how the story plays out, may lead to him earning yet another KOF tournament victory.
