The next comic property coming from Kingsman and Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar and Netflix has been revealed, with the newly announced King of Spies putting a new spin on an old gunslinger classic.

Back in 2017, Netflix acquired Millarworld, Mark Millar’s creator-owned publisher. Netflix’s purchase of Millarworld was their first acquisition, drawing comparisons to Disney’s acquisition of Marvel, and the many adaptations produced as a result. The purchase made sense for Netflix, since many of Millar’s titles have made it to the big screen as budding franchises. Since the acquisition, Netflix/Millarworld announced three new comic books: The Magic Order, Prodigy, and Sharkey the Bounty Hunter. Sharkey was announced in 2018 and published back in 2019, so it has been a while since Millarworld or Netflix have made an announcement on the comic book front. A wait now ended with the reveal of King of Spies.

Netflix and Millarworld have officially announced King of Spies as a brand new publishing venture, with a title certain to bring to mind another of Millar’s well-known works, Kingsman. But in an official statement, Millar says the story is inspired by the idea of “an old gun-fighter, going back for one last job,” and that everyone in-house is excited for the new project and the depth of the emotion (and violence!) the story will bring. Millar is obviously expected to be writing the project, but Netflix and Millarworld have yet to release the name of the artist attached to the project (assuring fans that they will later on), saying only that the artist providing the visuals for the book is a comics “superstar.” In the meantime, Netflix and Millarworld have released an official synopsis and teaser art for the series by two well-known names in comics: Loki’s Ozgur Yildirim and Wolverine’s Mike Chiarello. Take a look at the artwork below:

There’s greed and corruption at every level, untouchable despots he was forbidden to go near and a system he just doesn’t believe in any more. He wants to use his remaining time to make a difference with his particular set of skills, and repair the damage he did in his private life at the same time. The most dangerous man in the world has gone rogue and he knows where all the bodies are buried. Now it’s time to go after the REAL monsters…

King of Spies Coming From Netflix & Kingsman Creator Mark Millar

Everyone loves a tough-nosed spy story, and King of Spies sounds like it will be plenty gritty, between a fatal brain tumor, and all manner of greed and corruption. Millar’s unique take on spy stories and obvious passion for the genre are sure to make this a book fans will not want to miss, even if the decision to conceal their “superstar” artist until a later date definitely raises questions about who they have in their back pocket for this project. Even so, Mark Millar is one of the biggest names in independent comics, and Netflix is still king of streaming. There are few beings in either of their respective fields more well-known than them, so any announcement containing both of those names is bound to be a thrilling one for comics fans and streaming fans alike.

While there is no set date publication date for King of Spies as of yet (nor is there a date that the mystery artist will be revealed), that won’t stop Millar’s fans from anticipating more details all the same.
