King Richard: The Main Characters, Ranked By Intelligence

Based on the incredible true story, King Richard is filled with characters who are smart enough to envision and manifest a trailblazing future and characters who are too short-sighted to seize the opportunity to become a part of two of the greatest careers in the history of American sports.

Some of the characters, such as Will Hodges and Paul Cohen, fail to demonstrate intelligence by limiting their thinking to what they have seen done in the past. Other characters, such as Richard Williams and Brandy Price, prove their cleverness by mapping out and pursuing an ambitious plan for the future. And other characters, like Venus and Serena Williams, show how bright they are by shattering expectations on and off the court.

9 Will Hodges

One of the major themes of King Richard is the Williams family’s constant struggle to fit in with a tennis world that does not typically accept people who come from their racial and economic background. This building tension comes to a head as Will Hodges proposes that Richard hand over control of the girls’ careers to him.

Will and his assistant are incredibly arrogant in the conversation with Richard and completely misplay their hand. As a result, they end up missing out on being a part of two of the most successful athletic careers of all time. Will’s ego and inability to connect with Richard costs him dearly.

8 Paul Cohen

As a coach to some high-profile players, Paul Cohen is clearly savvy and experienced. He plays an important role in Venus’ career and helps take her to the next level after he becomes her coach.

However, Paul is ultimately short-sighted, overlooking Serena’s massive potential and not seeing the new path that Richard was trying to set Venus on. While he may be technically sound, he is far from being the most inspiring coach and is not smart enough to see the talent and potential that is right in front of him.

7 Arantxa Sánchez Vicario

Although Arantxa Sánchez Vicario only appears briefly in the film, she plays a vital role in the story as Venus’ first real test as a professional. As the highest-ranked player in the world, she gets frustrated when she cannot easily overcome a teenager making her professional debut.

Arantxa then makes the unlikeable, but ultimately smart, decision to freeze out Venus by calling for a bathroom break and taking as long as possible to throw Venus off. The move works and Arantxa is able to capitalize by winning the match.

6 Rick Macci

While the other coaches that Richard tries to hire either overlook the Williams sisters completely or scare him off with their prices, Rick Macci is smart enough to realize the future earning potential of the girls.

Because of this, Rick is willing to invest in Venus and Serena for several years before making even a cent off of them. He is smart enough to stick by Venus even after she turns down a multimillion-dollar contract with Nike. Rick is willing to play the long and has the foresight to deal with Richard and all the waiting. He knows that the payoff will be worth it in the end and he is rewarded handsomely for his patience.

5 Brandy Price

Although Brady Price does not get as much attention or credit as Richard does, she makes sure that he knows she contributed just as much to the girls’ careers as he did. She has an excellent knowledge of the game, and is able to identify the importance of implementing an open stance and helps Serena fix her serve.

Brandy is also smart enough to see when Richard needs to be reined in and is not afraid of letting him know when he is going too far. She is a smart and caring character who helps elevate the movie to a place that even non-sports fans can enjoy it.

4 Serena Williams

Despite the fact that Serena Williams has gone on to eclipse her sister on the court, the movie takes place during a period when she is in her sister’s shadow. Because of this, Serena does not get as many moments to shine, but she proves to be smart and competitive.

Even as a child, she is sharp enough to sign herself up for a tournament without her parents knowing. Off the court, Richard requires her to maintain straight A’s in school, making sure she gets a proper education.

3 The Other Sisters

While the movie mostly focuses on Venus and Serena, their half-sisters are shown to be brilliant young women as well. Richard does what he can to ensure that Tunde, Isha, and Lyndrea are set up for success by forcing them to take their schooling seriously.

When the police come to check on the girls, Richard points out that the three of them are at the top of classes in school and he has them demonstrate their breadth of knowledge in front of the officers. It is also mentioned that Tunde graduates as the valedictorian of her class.

2 Richard Williams

From the beginning, it is clear that Richard Williams is determined to be the architect of his daughters’ careers. He puts together a 78-page plan detailing every step of the journey. Despite not having the experience or training, he is able to use hard work and cleverness to train his daughters to become tennis proteges.

While the people around him may get tired of his antics, he is smart enough to focus on the big picture, maintaining a perspective that other tennis parents do not have so that he can set his daughters up for long-term success. The character is one of Will Smith’s best roles and his intellect helps give his daughters a major leg up on the competition.

1 Venus Williams

While Venus Williams’ on-the-court accomplishments are impressive, it is her off-the-court intelligence and determination that make King Richard a great feel-good movie. She is a highly educated young woman, nearly fluent in four languages and a straight-A student.

She is also a shrewd businesswoman, making the risky decision to turn down a lucrative offer from Nike out of a desire to prove herself. Venus also proves her emotional intelligence by having the poise and fortitude to carry the weight of being a pioneer in the sport. Smart, savvy, and mature, Venus proves herself to be the most intelligent character in the film.
