The spy genre has something of a lengthy cinematic legacy. While many would argue that nobody does it better than James Bond, over the years a variety of different franchises have pushed the spy envelope – resulting in a reignited genre that even Mr Bond was eventually forced to take note of and act upon.

Yet for all the enormity of franchises like Mission: Impossible or Jason Bourne, Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service arrived in 2015 with somewhat minimal hype. Based on Mark Millar and David Gibbons’ comic book The Secret Service, the fast past, street-smart, sardonic spy thriller was a surprise blockbuster that brought in $415 million worldwide on an $81 million budget.

Given the film’s critical and financial success, it should come as no surprise that a sequel has been lined up – and throughout the course of the last few weeks we’ve gradually begun to learn more and more about Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The most recent news to arrive (as reported by Deadline), is that former Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal (aka Oberyn Martell) is now in talks to join the Kingsman sequel’s cast.

Game of Thrones fans will remember Oberyn Martell’s explosive (pun intended) demise in the fourth season at the hands of Gregor Clegane. While audiences lamented the death of Pascal’s heroic Martell, there is a possibility that should he officially join the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, he very well could do so as Jack – one of the two American agents (the other being Ginger, played by Halle Berry) who work for the US based secret organization known as Statesmen. The character of Jack has yet to be cast and has previously been described by Empire Magazine as a “swaggering, sharpshooting cowboy”. Both he and Ginger will become co-workers of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) upon the British Kingsman’s arrival in America for some as of yet undetermined business.

While Pascal’s confirmation as part of The Golden Circle’s cast will certainly be a welcome edition, many Kingsman fans are still wondering whether or not Harry Hart (Colin Firth) will in fact return from the dead – either figuratively or literally – in the Kingsman sequel. At present time, there remains some confusion on the issue, but a recently-released poster for the film teases Hart’s return, showing only his eyeglasses on a backdrop of text that reads: “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

It’s clear that The Golden Circle still has a few tricks up its sleeve and that the full cast has yet to be assembled. So far, the idea of Taron Eggerton and Mark Strong joining Halle Berry in taking on Oscar-winner Julian Moore’s super villain Poppy brings its own level of intrigue to the table. However, once all the pieces are in place and the full cast is known, anticipation for The Golden Circle will likely hit fever pitch.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens in U.S. theaters on June 16th, 2017.
