Knockout City Review A Complex Blast Of A Multiplayer Game

Developer Velan Studios’ new multiplayer title Knockout City takes elements of popular shooters like Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends and infuses them with a kid friendly aesthetic and intriguingly complex mechanics. Rather than slapping a gun in the hands of its players, Knockout City’s matches are fought using dodgeballs. While there are a few kinks to be worked out, Knockout City is a fast-paced and exciting multiplayer game.

Knockout City is a team-based multiplayer “shooter” that is requires a lot of cooperation to win in just about every match type. It is actually very similar to EA multiplayer game Rocket Arena, but the main object of Knockout City is to run around a small arena in 3v3 match-ups in order to find dodgeballs to throw at opponents. A standard dodgeball can eliminate an enemy in two hits, whereas some special balls can bring down an enemy sooner or affect them in different ways. In the normal deathmatch mode the first team to reach ten eliminations will win that round and then play again until one team has won two rounds. There are a few other game modes as well, but this sums up the basic idea behind each one.

While Knockout City seems like a relatively simple game on the surface, the dodgeball throwing mechanics are actually much more complicated than they seem at first glance. A dodgeball can be charged up in order to adjust the speed at which it is thrown, but the player can also use a spin or jump to force the ball to curve or be lobbed at their opponents. The game also allows for faking an opponent out by pretending to throw the ball, passing to a teammate that may have a better shot, and even catching balls that are thrown right out of the air. Knockout City also features special balls that are well-suited to different contextual problems. For example, the Bomb Ball will explode after a time and kill anything in its path. All of these different abilities must be used in conjunction with each other to keep opponents on their toes, and it makes every match up a very competitive fight.

The most interesting ability that Knockout City features is one that allows its players to roll up into a ball to be picked up by their teammates. They can then be thrown like a normal dodgeball to deal damage against their opponents. Teams are then forced to decide on the fly whether they would like to use this ability to have more firepower, or have all three members attacking at the same time.

Knockout City shares a similar aesthetic and mechanics with the massively popular Fortnite. The visual style itself is a huge similarity between the two, and Knockout City also features a battle pass, seasonal events, rotating game modes, and a slew of cosmetic items to be purchased that would all feel right at home within the battle-royale genre that Fortnite helped catapult to greatness. Despite these similarities, Knockout City offers enough interesting gameplay mechanics to allow it to stand on its on two feet.

Knockout City is in a strong place to capture the hearts of both casual and competitive gamers alike. Its cutesy graphics hide deeply rewarding dodgeball-throwing mechanics that never fail to be both entertaining and engaging. Once ranked leagues and other gameplay modes pick up steam it will be interesting to see how many gamers jump on the bandwagon. Player engagement is always difficult to predict, but as a product, Knockout City has a chance to be a truly special game based on its mechanics alone.
