Kojima Blue Box Conspiracy Theory Explained

A new survival horror game for the PlayStation 5 called Abandoned, developed by Blue Box Game Studios, was announced back in April, but the reveal was co-opted into a conspiracy theory that it was a secret project by Hideo Kojima. The visionary game director is most recently known for the very odd Death Stranding, which received a similarly odd reveal trailer for its Director’s Cut at E3. Kojima rose to prominence as creator of the Metal Gear franchise before an unceremonious departure from Konami amidst a canned Silent Hill game that was being made in collaboration with horror director and good friend of Kojima, Guillermo del Toro.

The conspiracy of a Kojima-developed Silent Hill spiritual successor began with two not-so-convincing pieces of evidence: Kojima sharing initials with Abandoned’s director, Hasan Kahraman, and Blue Box being code for BB, or Bridge Babies, the pod-bound pre-natal children of Death Stranding. The conspiracy was apparently dead on arrival when Blue Box immediately came out and denied any association with Kojima. After all, Blue Box is apparently a small developer based in the Netherlands, and Kojima lives in Japan, presumably busy with other projects.

The denial of Kojima’s involvement didn’t stop the conspiracy theorists, though, and the evidence has only mounted since then, becoming a surprisingly complex web of clues. All the evidence supporting the Kojima Blue Box theory has been compiled in a single thread by Reddit user AidThisFellowUser. In fact, there’s an entire subreddit called TheBlueBoxConspiracy dedicated to proving Kojima is behind the game.

Some of the Evidence in the Kojima Blue Box Conspiracy

Kojima has actually done this before, developing PT under the development studio pseudonym 7780s Studio, and creating a fictitious CEO Joakim Mogren of non-existent Moby Dick Studio to reveal Metal Gear Solid V. Geoff Keighley, who had Kojima appear at Summer Game Fest 2021, was involved in the latter stunt, and happens to be a part of the Blue Box conspiracy as well, apparently being involved with promoting Abandoned. Additionally, the theory involving the initials of the two game directors has evolved. Using Google Translate, “Hideo” in Japanese becomes “Kahraman” in Turkish, with both names translating to “hero” in English.

Theorists also spotted a Netherlands flag on Sam Bridges’ backpack in the Death Stranding Director’s Cut teaser trailer. The Blue Box Twitter account frequently posts at odd times for a company based in the Netherlands, often tweeting in the middle of the night, which conveniently aligns with mid-morning in Japan. The full list of evidence compiled by AidThisFellowUser involves many links, including a PSN profile for Kahraman which has a suspicious number of trophies, the Blue Box YouTube page banner featuring some very quiet looking hills, an Apple App Store profile, and more. If this Blue Box Game Studios conspiracy theories happens to be true, and Abanonded is really a Hideo Kojima production, this may go down as one of the most convoluted game reveals of all time.
