Kristen Wiig’s upcoming comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar has been removed from Lionsgate’s theatrical release calendar and will instead debut directly on premium VOD. Barb and Star marks the second film from Wiig and co-writer Annie Mumolo, who were both nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Bridesmaids. The film was produced by another pair of comedy heavyweights, Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay (Anchorman, The Big Short).

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar was originally set for release last summer, but was pushed back over a year to July 16. However, per Variety, Barb and Star will now be available to rent at home starting February 12. In addition to the new release date announcement, Lionsgate also dropped a new teaser trailer for the film that does such a good job of teasing, it actually never shows the faces of the title characters.

Unlike Warner Bros., who moved the majority of its 2021 titles to a hybrid theatrical/HBO Max model, Lionsgate hasn’t announced any formal strategy for shifting some of its upcoming movies to VOD. However, the company has clearly recognized the need to free up space as COVID-19 restrictions continue to force delays. This is clear in the decision about Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

Per its official synopsis, the film follows Wiig and Mumolo as lifelong friends Barb and Star while they embark on the adventure of a lifetime when they decide to leave their small Midwestern town for the first time…ever. Along the way, they’ll encounter romance, friendship, and a villain’s evil plot. Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar co-stars Damon Wayans, Jr., Jaime Dornan, Vanessa Bayer and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
