Travis Scott appeared in his first interview in wake of the Astroworld tragedy and the Keeping Up With the Kardashians affiliate seemingly defended the raging he promotes at his shows. Travis and Kylie Jenner have been pretty silent since a mass casualty at Travis’s music festival resulted in 10 deaths. As the Houston rapper faces hundreds of lawsuits related to the incident, Travis is finally ready to open up and answer everyone’s questions. While sitting down with Charlamagne, Travis explained the raging his fans are known to do at his shows while discussing the aftermath of his festival.
The “SICKO MODE” rapper is trying to rise from the ashes after facing worldwide scrutiny last month following the deaths caused by his Astroworld Festival. It was an annual event Travis hosted in his hometown of Houston each year. After the pandemic put a halt to the 2020 festivities, Travis fans came rowdy and ready to rage for this year’s festival. But tragedy struck once Travis hit the stage with swarms of his fans rushing the stage and causing total panic. In the end, lives were lost with the youngest victim being just 9 years old. Now, hundreds of concertgoers have filed lawsuits against the rapper and all involved with the production and failed safety measures at the show.
Travis recently appeared in his first interview about the tragedy. Travis sat down with Charlamagne Tha God and explained how unaware he was of the melee that was taking place in the audience during his performance. “I didn’t know the exact details until minutes before the press conference [after my set],” Travis said. “And even at that moment you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’. At first, Travis was under the impression that some people were just passing out and fainting like he’s seen happen many times before. “People pass out, things happen at concerts, but something like that…” he continued while trailing off. Travis said he is the type of artist that always wants to ensure the safety of his fans during a show.
He made note of stopping during his performances to check on his fans. It’s something he’s been known to do in the past and he also did once during the Astroworld concert. “I stopped it a couple of times to just make sure everybody was OK,” Travis said. “And I really just go off the fans’ energy as a collective — call and response. I just didn’t hear that.” Charlamagne went on to press Travis about the culture of raging he promotes at his shows. Over the years, Travis has made it a part of his brand to incite rowdy behavior whenever he performs or makes a public appearance around his fans. But it’s something Travis believes artists go into with safety in mind. “‘Raging’…there’s not a textbook definition,” Travis said. “But in concerts, we’ve grown it to be just the experience of fun. It’s not about just…harm. It’s not about that. It’s about letting go and having fun, help others and love each other.”
Nowhere during the discussion did Travis take responsibility for the devastation and deaths that came from his concert. He did express concern and sadness over the tragic events. He had reached out and made offers to pay for the funerals of those who lost their lives. Most recently, Travis filed a motion to dismiss the countless lawsuits against him. As he embarks on his road to redemption, Travis is speaking up in hopes of gaining understanding from the public. Meanwhile, he is awaiting the arrival of his second child with Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kylie Jenner. Travis is trying to save himself from being canceled. Live shows are where the money is at, and Travis’s tragic festival really messed up his performance fee income.
