Lady Gaga Consulted Bradley Cooper Before Taking House of Gucci Role

Lady Gaga says she consulted her A Star is Born co-star, Bradley Cooper, before taking on the role of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. To date, the new film – which is based on the true story of one-time Gucci head Maurizio Gucci – has fared moderately well among critics and audiences. But, it’s Gaga’s lead performance that has repeatedly been pointed to as the film’s highlight and biggest chance for an Oscar.

Beginning in 2001, Gaga made her acting debut in a tiny role on the hit HBO series The Sopranos. Since that time the multi-award-winning singer-songwriter has steadily increased her on-screen output, going from TV to movies with roles in films like Machete Kills, Muppets Most Wanted and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. But it wasn’t until 2018 that the beloved popstar went from being a musician who lands the occasional film role, to a legitimate Oscar contender for Best Actress. Though Gaga failed to take home the golden statuette for her work as Ally in Cooper’s A Star Is Born remake, the film still managed to afford her some Oscar glory for the song “Shallow.”

Now with House of Gucci currently in theatres, the big question on many minds is whether Gaga’s performance in the film will provide her with her second Best Actress nomination in three years. The official list of Oscar nods is still months away, but for now, Gaga appears to be taking everything in stride. While speaking with EW recently, the 35-year-old makes it clear that her acting career isn’t taken lightly, and that prior to accepting the role of Reggiani in House of Gucci, she looked to Cooper for advice:

Bradley Cooper really believed in me for the role of Ally Maine in A Star Is Born… It was the success of our artistic collaboration that landed me where I am now. […] Absolutely… I’ve confided in Bradley for years, and I’ve always appreciated his support and his advice, his thoughts on my future endeavors.

Clearly Gaga made the right choice with regard to taking the part, but the fact that Cooper played an important role in that decision likely won’t do much to diminish rumours that the two have been involved in a romantic relationship. Those rumours originally kicked off after they starred together in A Star Is Born, and in the years since, there has been a wide range of speculation from fans and media alike. Nonetheless, Cooper obviously holds a special place in Gaga’s creative decision-making process, and consulting him before taking the role of Reggiani is further evidence of the professional respect that she has for him.

As previously mentioned, there’s still a long way to go before Oscar nominations are revealed, and simply because Lady Gaga is currently enjoying a lot of hype over her work in House of Gucci does not guarantee awards season success. It’s arguably more interesting to note that her ability as an acclaimed actor is gradually being proven, and even if she doesn’t triumph at next year’s Oscar ceremony, that doesn’t mean she won’t eventually land the sort of role that will further highlight her considerable talent.
