Last Of Us 2 Devs Standalone Multiplayer Game Confirmed By Job Listing

Naughty Dog’s official website features a job listing that confirms The Last of Us Part II developer is presently creating a standalone multiplayer title. That the Santa Monica-based crew has its hands full with an online project isn’t exactly new information. Ahead of TLoU Part II’s launch, Naughty Dog confirmed the Factions multiplayer component would launch at a later date.

What remained unclear, however, was whether or not the online suite would release independently of or as an attachment to TLoU Part II’s main game. A few hints have dropped here and there, the most recent of which made the rounds in March 2021 thanks to a different job posting. The listing in question showed Naughty Dog’s interest in hiring for an Economy Designer capable of crafting “game economy and player progression systems.” Now yet another job ad has offered additional information about the mysterious project.

Naughty Dog’s “Careers” page features a job listing for a Level/Environment Designer (Multiplayer) opening that more than likely concerns the online Factions experience. Interestingly, the ad notes that whoever joins the crew will take part in its latest endeavor – “the studio’s first standalone multiplayer game.” The page additionally mentions a pretty lofty goal, namely Naughty Dog’s desire to “bring the same level of ambition and quality of our signature, story-driven games to this unique multiplayer project.” No other notable specifics appear in the posting.

Though there remain plenty of questions that need answers, the above listing at least confirms that Naughty Dog’s next project is indeed a standalone multiplayer game. This serves as further proof that The Last of Us Part II’s Factions component will eventually launch as its own entity.

Such an endeavor will undoubtedly go a long way in helping Sony establish worthwhile online experiences from its internal developers. The publisher has tried to gain a foothold in the multiplayer space for quite some time. And it once succeeded with the likes of Zipper Interactive’s SOCOM and MAG titles. In the years since those franchises fired their last shot, however, Sony has experienced minimal success with online-focused projects such as Predator: Hunting Grounds and, more recently, Destruction AllStars. Perhaps Naughty Dog can turn the tide?
