New photos from the set of HBO’s upcoming series The Last of Us give a detailed look at post-apocalyptic Jackson, Wyoming. Following Naughty Dog’s release of The Last of Us in 2013, two film adaptations were attempted and abandoned before HBO announced plans for a television adaptation of the game back in 2020. The series began filming in Calgary, Alberta in July of 2021 and is projected to wrap sometime in June of 2022. In addition to being PlayStation Productions’ first foray into television, The Last of Us is HBO’s first show based on a video game—which is being jointly produced by Naughty Dog.

Co-president of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckman—who also worked as a writer and director on The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II—is executive producing and co-writing HBO’s The Last of Us alongside Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). Druckmann is also serving as director for certain episodes of the series, which will likely recreate beloved moments from the game. Like the game, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic United States and follows a smuggler named Joel (Pedro Pascal) as he escorts a teenage girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country for a militia group known as the Fireflies. The series will also star Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter, Sarah, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, and Merle Dandridge, who reprises her role as Firefly leader Marlene from the games. While set across the U.S., The Last of Us is filming in Canada, with various locations re-worked to replicate iconic locations from the game. For example, Canmore, Alberta, has been transformed into Jackson for the series.

The set photos give fans a look at post-apocalyptic Jackson and look like they were plucked right out of the games. The Last of Us’ 10-episode first season will adapt the events of the first game. The bulk of that story takes place twenty years after the initial Cordyceps outbreak, beginning with Joel and Tess in the Boston Quarantine Zone before getting involved with Marlene and meeting Ellie. Later in the game, Joel decides to find his brother, Tommy, a former Firefly, in the hope that he can help them locate the remaining Fireflies. Joel and Ellie find Tommy and his wife Maria near a hydroelectric dam—which powers Jackson, Wyoming, a thriving community for survivors founded by the pair. That being said, while Jackson is seen in The Last of Us, it isn’t until The Last of Us Part II that players see/reside inside the community.

HBO’s detailed inclusion of Jackson reinforces the idea that The Last of Us series will explore locations and characters that either weren’t in the first game or were merely touched upon. With a reported eight-figure budget per episode, the production appears to be doing everything in its power to recapture the look and feel of its source material while simultaneously fleshing it out. Previously-leaked images have offered up looks at “Austin, Texas” during the initial outbreak, the Boston Quarantine Zone, and Druckmann shared an image of Pascal and Ramsey in full costume—an image as uncanny as the show’s sets.
