A new set video from actor Christopher Meloni reveals filming has begun on Law & Order: Organized Crime season 2. A spinoff of the long-running drama series Law & Order: SVU, Organized Crime features the return of Meloni’s Detective Elliot Stabler. Until earlier this year, he hadn’t appeared in the Law & Order franchise since 2011. Organized Crime begins with the tragic murder of Stabler’s wife, Kathy, depicted in a crossover with SVU. This unfortunate event motivates him to join the Organized Crime task force.

Season 1 of the series consists of eight episodes, with the finale airing in June 2021. Filming was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the show has also faced turmoil within its creative team. Writer Craig Gore was fired from the series in June 2020 following controversial Facebook posts related to protests taking place in Los Angeles. Law & Order: Organized Crime also changed showrunners prior to its season 1 premiere. Despite these issues, the show has been a success for NBC, with the network renewing Law & Order: Organized Crime for season 2 in May 2021.

In a set video posted on July 19, Meloni shared filming has started on the upcoming season. The video shows the actor in a mask, as the cast and crew are welcomed back to set. Meloni used the hashtag #firstdayofschool in his caption. Check out the star’s video below:

As Law & Order: Organized Crime season 2 is set to premiere on September 23, 2021, it makes sense production is now underway. Season 2 will be quite a bit longer than season 1, with 24 episodes ordered. This means the cast and crew need to get a jump start on the season well before it starts airing to avoid any unplanned breaks between episodes. Additionally, starting filming now means Law & Order: Organized Crime will hopefully have a little wiggle room if a production shutdown happens due to the pandemic, as occurred twice during season 1.

While Meloni is careful not to reveal anything about season 2 in his set video, it should make viewers excited about the upcoming episodes regardless. Audiences can likely expect more crossovers with Law & Order: SVU, as season 1 featured two that helped bring in new viewers. With the higher episode count, there will be even more opportunities for intersecting storylines that see Stabler interact with his old partner and now Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Since filming has now started on Law & Order: Organized Crime season 2, hopefully story details about the new episodes are revealed soon.
