Leonardo DiCaprio almost froze while trying to save his dogs during the filming of Don’t Look Up. DiCaprio continues to be one of the most in-demand and sought-after actors in the industry, best known for his Oscar-winning performance in The Revenant and his collaborations with Martin Scorsese in films like The Aviator, The Departed, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Aside from acting, he is one of the most active and passionate environmental activists in Hollywood, with immense focus on the climate change movement, which has led to his recent starring role in Don’t Look Up.
The science-fiction satire, directed and co-written by Adam McKay, revolves around DiCaprio’s character Dr. Randall Mindy, an astronomer who tries to warn everyone about a deadly comet headed to Earth. DiCaprio leads an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Rob Morgan, and Mark Rylance. Despite mixed reviews, the movie has been selected on many top 10 lists and has been nominated multiple times at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards, the latter of which DiCaprio has also received a nomination.
DiCaprio revealed in a cast discussion with EW a story that happened behind the scenes of Don’t Look Up, which involved his two dogs. DiCaprio had brought two rescue Huskies that according to McKay and Hill, were very intense and problematic. During the shoot, one of the dogs fell into a frozen lake, and DiCaprio immediately rushed in to save him. But once he got the dog out, “the other one jumped in” and eventually they were all at one point, in the lake. Lawrence also witnessed the whole encounter.
The stunning story is one of the many events that has been shared during the production of the disaster movie when the cameras are not rolling. Another story involves Lawrence actually getting high in a scene and the cast’s reaction to Meryl Streep on set. It shows that despite the movie filming under strict protocols during the pandemic, the cast members can still generate memorable stories from the experience.
While DiCaprio is known to give unforgettable performances in his films, he is also known to be a stand-up guy and willing to put his neck on the line. One of the most talked-about scenes in Don’t Look Up is when his character gives a ranting and brave monologue, similar to one in the 1976 satirical film Network by Peter Finch. DiCaprio will continue to be on movie screens in the distant future, continuing his collaboration with Scorsese in The Killers of The Flower Moon with Robert De Niro. Don’t Look Up will be available to stream on Netflix on December 24.
