Lex Luthor Just Became DCs Newest Form of Brainiac

Warning: contains major spoilers for Batman/Superman 2021 Annual #1!

One of DC’s smartest villains just got a major intellectual upgrade, as Lex Luthor has turned himself into a strange version of Brainiac. Batman/Superman 2021 Annual #1 features several villainous transformations, but Lex Luthor’s is definitely one of the most dangerous. His brain power is much higher and now, he has more control over others than he normally does.

Brainiac has psionic abilities and in the New 52 he was able to infect others with a virus that allowed him to control them. Lex Luthor does not typically control others, as his abilities are far more limited. He is most often seen in a power suit or pulling strings behind secret schemes and technological projects. While Brainiac does not appear in this series, his powers are now being adopted by Lex Luthor with a major power-up.

Lex Luthor’s latest transformation in Batman/Superman 2021 Annual #1 is the work of Gene Luen Yang, Francesco Francavilla, Paul Pelletier, Mick Gray, Hi-Fi, and ALW’s Troy Peteri. In the World of the Knight, Lex Luthor is the warden of Arkham Asylum and has been experimenting on villains from other worlds. He has already transformed the Penguin and Joker, but now he is augmenting himself using his own alternate self from the World of Tomorrow. Doubling Luthor’s own mind makes his intelligence skyrocket in unexpected ways.

Superman goes to the World of the Knight to take on Lex Luthor. Although this is technically Batman’s foe to fight, the Man of Steel has far more experience with confronting horrors that arise from technological advancement. Lex Luthor has been able to mentally augment himself, absorbing more and more power, until he has the ability to possess the minds of some of Batman’s iconic villains. These include an alternate version of Two-Face (half-man, half-robot), Poison Ivy, and Man-Bat – all under Lex Luthor’s control. Brainiac does not have a presence within this comic as an alien, but Lex’s headpiece harkens to the circular detailing frequently present on Brainiac’s skull and suits.

This newly amalgamated villain is rather surprising since he has not fully been influenced by the presence of Brainiac or any similar being in his world. Instead, he is driven by his own ambition and thirst for power. This implies that in a world without Superman, Lex would still have obsessions with power that lead to him taking on attributes of far more powerful beings than his usual self does. To compete with Superman, Luthor typically builds himself a power suit, enhancing his strength and physical abilities. While his intellect is already rather high, he doesn’t tend to augment it. In a reality shared solely with the World’s Greatest Detective, his villainous decisions manifest rather differently. In many ways, this ability to augment himself and usurp Brainiac’s abilities makes him far more dangerous. Lex Luthor has certainly proven his ambition with his latest scheme in DC Comics.
