With a reputation as one of the most emotionally charged series in gaming today, Life is Strange is no stranger to memorable characters. Its latest entry, True Colors, is no exception to this rule, with the series’ most refined and mature cast of characters yet.

However, as with any franchise, some characters are more relatable than others, and for a variety of reasons. Whether they were complicit in a murder, or simply an understanding friend who is easy to talk to, the characters in True Colors show varying degrees of likability that reveal their complex personalities.

10 Diane

Initially, Diane seemed like a nice, normal lady, as a fellow newcomer to the town. However, the player will notice her behavior becoming increasingly more stilted and bizarre following Gabe’s death. It almost feels as though everything she says is forced or rehearsed.

As things would turn out, she was, in fact, complicit in the Typhon tragedy, which has cemented her as one of the most unlikable characters in the game. Although her actions are understandable, it’s equally reasonable why players would feel so repulsed by a woman who not only allowed Gabe’s death to happen but also pretended like she had no role in it at all.

9 Mac

Mac’s introduction to the player was already contentious. Before meeting him in person, Alex hears Gabe’s friend warn him that he’s “on the prowl.” And after only an hour of being in Haven, Alex witnesses Mac storm into Gabe’s apartment and proceed to beat him bloody under a baseless assumption of adultery with his girlfriend, Riley.

Fortunately for Mac, he does, in the end, redeem himself and genuinely tries to right his wrongs. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get enough screen-time after his belligerence to change most players’ minds. It certainly doesn’t help that he continues to go after Riley even after she rebuffs his advances.

8 Officer Pike

After the horrors endured by Sean Diaz, one of gaming’s best big brothers, in Life Is Strange 2, many players tensed up upon first meeting Officer Pike. He approaches Alex in the bar alleging that he’s going to arrest her – but then, as payback for all of Gabe’s pranks on him, he starts to laugh, as it was all a joke.

Perhaps this wasn’t the most tasteful first impression to put on a cop, but ultimately, Pike proves to be a truly good man. He does his best to be there for Alex and Gabe, and even though he potentially needs some pushing to hold Typhon accountable for their misdeeds, his heart was always in the right place.

7 Duckie

Reginald McAllister III – otherwise known as Duckie – doesn’t have too many scenes in the game, but each scene he’s in is a heart-stealer. He’s reminiscent of the type of quirky old man everybody meets at least once in their life, and his affable manner is just undeniably charming.

However, he’s charming at the expense of his own inner feelings, which leaves him at the mercy of his own grief. If Alex manages to find him at his key moments, she’ll be able to help him mourn, with the reward being his support and, of course, another funny Duckie text. It’s just a shame that his more emotional moments are somewhat hard to find.

6 Jeb

After some well-timed quotes and cues from him in the game’s launch trailer, many players wondered if he would, in fact, play an antagonistic role in the game. As it would turn out, they were right to be suspicious – but only with the most intense of disappointments.

Jeb was written marvelously, and his connection with the main cast felt incredibly genuine and full of heart. He seemed like such a down-to-earth and reliable guy, many players found themselves in disbelief when his insidious side came out. But even then, he was shown to be capable of remorse. Although his actions were reprehensible, it’s undeniable that he was, truly, a good character.

5 Riley

One of the reasons why Life is Strange: True Colors is critically acclaimed is the game’s focus on characterization and player interaction. This is most evident in Alex’s encounters with Riley. Considering she’s one of the first characters Alex meets in Haven, it’s a wonder that all of her extra scenes tend to be tucked away within the town. Many players end up missing out on some quality time with Riley, which is a shame, considering how sweet and interesting she is.

Riley and Alex have a lot in common, and their budding friendship is something that ought to have been explored more. She has a good, sensible head on her shoulders, and her dilemma between taking care of her nana Eleanor and her desire to go to college is framed very realistically.

4 Ryan

The Life is Strange series has a track record of framing emotionally vulnerable protagonists against less-than-stellar men. In the first game, Warren was still very young and immature and Elliott was abusive. In Life is Strange 2, Finn, while fairly amicable, did some pretty suspect things with Sean’s brother Daniel, who was too naive to know what he was getting into.

Thankfully, True Colors made up for all this with their inclusion of Ryan. He’s not only handsome, but he’s also sweet and thoughtful, which results in some of the most heartwarming video game couple cutscenes in True Colors. And while he can potentially doubt Alex’s revelation about Jed, ultimately that’s a result of good writing, as his response was very realistic. Warren is likable because of his flawed good nature. He can make a mistake like anyone else, but he is quick to realize the error of his ways and apologizes when needed.

3 Steph

Honestly, both Ryan and Steph, as love interests, are equally charming and viable matches for Alex. However, since Steph is already familiar with LIS veterans since her first appearance in Life is Strange: Before the Storm, she has an existing background and established personality that is more fleshed out in True Colors.

After all, this is Steph: the cute dungeon master that everyone wanted to romance, way back when Before the Storm came out. She’s tough, fun, and unflinchingly loyal to Alex, often supporting her when nobody else will. Steph is one of the most mature and intriguing characters in the series, and the recently released DLC Wavelengths only add to her complexity and likability.

2 Alex

One notable aspect about Life is Strange: True Colors is that it is one of the best video games with Asian representation. Alex, the Asian lead character, is genuinely a fantastic person and character to play as. In a series known for lovable protagonists, Deck Nine really went above and beyond with their characterization of this guitar-playing empath.

Alex really does feel like a real person, full of relatable internal conflicts and an amalgamation of well-rounded traits that have helped players feel more connected to her than prior protagonists. She’s reserved, yet clever; cool, yet humble. And considering all she’s had to go through, the player will find themselves rooting for her, over and over again, as she faces each challenge with bravery.

1 Gabe

Of course, the most likable character in the game has to be Gabe Chen, if only because the brief amount of time players spent with him was definitely not enough. And it wasn’t enough because Gabe, quite simply, was just that likable.

This was, of course, a deliberate move on the writers’ parts, but it definitely worked, as Gabe left a lasting impression on both Alex and the player. He was everything a cool big brother should be: funny, protective, and just totally real. There was no doubt about the fact that Haven was changed for the better because of him, and the biggest shame in the entire game is that he had to die so soon.
