The Tender Bar opens in theaters nationwide on December 22 and premieres on Prime Video on January 7, 2022. Directed by George Clooney, the film tells the story of J.R. (Tye Sheridan), a boy growing up under the influence of his bartender Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck). Lily Rabe plays J.R.’s mother, who finds herself struggling to provide for her son and leave the home of her father (Christopher Lloyd). The film is based on the memoir by J.R. Moehringer.

Screen Rant spoke to Rabe about working with the incredible cast and her first celebrity encounter.

Screen Rant: This is one of those sets where between Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Christopher Lloyd, you, Ty Sheridan, I just would want to be a fly on the wall. How do you describe the experience of just being on that set? Did they feel like you were doing something special?

Lily Rabe: It really did. It really did. I left work every day feeling so lit up, and that’s not always the case. My boyfriend would say, I sort of came in from work just lit up. I was. There was so much joy on the set. It was such an incredible group of people. We really fell in love with one another very quickly and very easily, which was really great when you’re telling a story like this.

I don’t think I could like hold back from picking people’s brains about certain projects that they’ve done. Did you have that moment on set with anybody?

Lily Rabe: Well, George [Clooney] and Ben [Affleck] are great storytellers. I didn’t have to ask, I just got to listen to one wonderful story after another. They both have remarkable senses of humor that were really wonderful to be around. But they also, they’re very curious guys. We all had that. We all just wanted to know about one another, and wanted to know about everyone’s past experiences, and what they’ve loved. There was a lot of sharing on the set. You didn’t really have to corner anyone and ask them for a story. We were just kind of always sharing.

Ben had said in one of these panels that Christopher Lloyd was the first celebrity he ever saw in the wild. Who was yours? It was the first time you were like, “I am gonna go up to this person and say something.”

Lily Rabe: I was so shy. I still kind of am. But, there was a moment. I think the first time I ever really knew, Madonna came over to my house when I was really young for a swim! But I think that was like the first time it dropped in. Because I was like, “Oh, I listen to her sing. I love her music. That’s her.”
