Linda Cardellini rose to fame when she starred in the short-lived teen drama Freaks and Geeks in 1999 that has since become a cult classic. But since then, she has appeared in more TV shows and movies than people probably even realize, most recently starring in Netflix series Dead To Me.
Like a chameleon, she slips perfectly into every role, playing everyone from an aimless big sister in the sitcom New Girl to a bored housewife who sleeps with her dapper neighbor in Mad Men.
10 Green Book (2018) – 77%
In this 2018 biographical comedy-drama, which swept the Oscars, Cardellini had a small role as the wife of main character Tony, who was played by Viggo Mortensen.
The series told the story of Tony, an Italian bouncer, who drove around a famous African American classical and jazz pianist, Don Shirley. It was based on actual interviews with Tony (conducted by his son, who co-wrote the film) as well as Shirley. Through the journey, Tony writes letters to his wife that deeply moves the woman.
9 The Founder (2016) – 81%
From 2016, this is another biographical comedy-drama, this time with Michael Keaton starring as Ray Kroc, founder of the McDonalds fast food chain.
Again only in a supporting role, Cardellini plays Joan Smith, the wife of Rollie Smith, the owner of a chain of upscale restaurants who shows interest in investing. Ray, meanwhile, shows interest in Joan.
8 Return (2011) – 83%
A 2011 independent film, Cardellini had a starring role in this flick about an American reservist returning home from a tour of duty in the Middle East, eager to see her husband and children.
But she quickly realizes that a lot has changed while she was away and she’s having a difficult time adjusting. Cardellini was universally praised for her portrayal of the woman as she went through her trials and tribulations.
7 A Simple Favor (2018) – 84%
This flick from 2018 had an all-female starring cast, and while Cardellini only had a small, supporting role, she was a scene stealer. The movie is about a wealthy woman named Emily who mysteriously disappears and her small-town vlogger friend Stephanie who tries to uncover what happened.
She plays Diana Hyland, an artist who once painted a portrait of the woman, who she refers to as a con artist. The role was integral to the plot of the film as Diana provided important information that helped Stephanie in her pursuit.
6 Brokeback Mountain (2005) – 87%
The award-winning romantic drama broke boundaries at a time when homosexuality wasn’t really being dealt with in such an open way on screen. The movie starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as two cowboys who develop a romantic and emotional relationship with one another.
Cardellini, once again, doesn’t have a huge role in the film. But she plays Cassie Cartwright, a waitress that Ennis (Heath Ledger) has a brief romantic relationship with.
5 Dead to Me (2019) – 90%
Interestingly, Cardellini’s highest-rated projects are all television, not movies. This Netflix series, which debuted in 2019 and has streamed two seasons to date, sees Cardellini playing a flighty woman who feels tremendous guilty after being involved in a car accident that kills a man. Then she find a way to secretly befriend the widow.
Once the truth is revealed, the two become good friends who get caught up in much more drama. The chemistry between Cardellini and Christina Applegate makes the show fabulous and Cardellini’s performance is tremendous.
4 Person Of Interest – 92%
This popular sci-fi crime drama is about a machine created to spy on people. But when the brilliant creator realizes the government wants to use it for ominous reasons, he fakes his own death and steals the machine back, using it instead to try and stop criminals.
While the show aired for five seasons, Cardellini only had a guest role in one episode. She played Megan Tillman, a doctor who stalked her sister’s rapist in an effort to get revenge. But she was called up on in future episodes to help the team when they needed things like medical records.
3 Mad Men – 94%
So many actors were in Mad Men and viewers might not even have recognized them because of the elaborate period costumes. One such person is Cardellini, who played the wife of Arnold Rosen, a neighbor of Don’s.
Not surprisingly, she sparked an affair with Don, despite the outright display of her Catholic faith and his marriage to Megan. She broke it off with Don and he was heartbroken, hellbent on getting her back. Weirdly, however, Don seemed attracted to her because her appearance reminded him of his stepmother and of the maternal prostitute who sexually assaulted him when he was a teenager. She is also the person who Sally catches Don in bed with.
2 Gravity Falls – 100%
Garnering a perfect score, this animated mystery comedy that aired from 2012 to 2016 featured Cardellini’s vocal talents as Wendy Corduro, a 15-year-old girl who works in the Mystery Shack and has attracted the interest of the main character, Dipper Pines, a 12-year-old boy.
The series was about twin pre-teens who go to visit their great uncle in a town filled with paranormal happenings and end up investigating various mysteries.
1 Freaks and Geeks – 100%
Not surprisingly, number-one on the list is this teen comedy-drama that many fans felt ended way too soon. It only lasted a single season but the Judd Apatow creation starred a number of actors who went on to become very famous including Cardellini as well as James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and Busy Philipps.
The series centered on Cardellini’s character Lindsay, a gifted student who ended up befriending a group of slackers and geeks in high school. While it ended way back in 2000, fans lobbied for unaired episodes to be broadcast and it has often been called one of the best TV series of all time, despite the premature cancellation.
