Little Nightmares Is Free On Steam Until May 30

The indie horror game Little Nightmares is currently free through gaming client Steam. Players who download the title before May 30 can keep the game permanently. The reason for the discount is currently unknown.

Little Nightmares follows Six, a young girl with a ravenous appetite. The game details her escape from The Maw, an underwater vessel much too large for someone of her size. Players have to solve puzzles and complete platforming challenges to escape The Maw, all while keeping Six satiated. The game received overall positive reviews and won the Gamescom 2016 Indie Award. A prequel, Little Nightmares II, was released earlier this year and recently surpassed one million sales.

Currently, Little Nightmares is at a 100% discount on Steam. The sale ends at 1:00 PM EST on May 30th. There was no official announcement on social media, either for the game itself or developer Tarsier Studios and publisher Bandai Namco has also been silent on the matter. Players who download the game or add it to their library can keep it forever, even after the promotion ends. Like with all free-to-keep promotions, Steam trading cards will not be dropped while playing. The DLC is also not included in the promotion.

The only place the promotion was announced was Steam itself. Despite the lack of fanfare, people still took notice. Fans quickly began promoting the event on Twitter, resulting in the game trending. Twitter users have been urging those curious to at least download the title, so they have it in their libraries for the future. Some are also pointing out the fine print that the promotion will continue “while supplies last.” As of this writing, there is no other mention of limited supplies on the Steam page or any sign that the promotion will end early.

Steam occasionally offers free-to-keep games, but they are typically given some sort of fanfare in order to drum up interest. Otherwise, they may be a promotional move for sequels or other titles by the same developer. It’s possible this could be the case for Little Nightmares. The prequel did drop just a few months ago, and the one million sales mark is worth celebrating. The fourth anniversary of Little Nightmares’ release also just passed. However, all of these situations would theoretically be announced closer to the event itself. It could just be a flash giveaway for no reason. Whatever the intention, horror fans should consider grabbing Six’s story for free before it’s too late.
