Marvel Confirmed Yelena Will Never Be An Avenger

Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye Episode 5 – “Ronin”.

Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) will likely never become an Avenger after Hawkeye made it clear how she feels about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Yelena has arrived in New York City to fulfill her contract to kill Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), which was set up in Black Widow’s post-credits scene. However, during her impromptu “girls’ night” with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Yelena made her overall feelings about the Avengers clear, despite her ‘sister,’ Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), being one of the superhero team’s founding members.

As Black Widow explained, Yelena spent most of her life as one of the brainwashed assassins of Russia’s Red Room until she was released from the mind control of General Dreykov (Ray Winstone) in 2016. After Yelena reunited with Natasha, they joined the rest of their ‘family,’ Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), to take down Dreykov and the Red Room. Hawkeye episode 5’s pre-credits sequence revealed that Yelena spent the next two years saving other Black Widows from their brainwashing until she died from Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) Infinity Gauntlet Snap. Five years later (but mere seconds to Yelena), Belova Blipped back to life only to learn that Natasha died in order for the Avengers to save the world. While Yelena seems to know the broad strokes of Natasha’s death, it’s unclear what details she actually has about why Romanoff sacrificed her life for the Soul Stone on Vormir and Clint Barton’s actual involvement in Avengers: Endgame.

Regardless, Yelena has no love for the Avengers and it’s doubtful she would ever actually become one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. After Yelena broke into Kate’s apartment and shared an awkward macaroni and cheese dinner with the young archer, the Black Widow assassin asked Bishop why she was so fond of and devoted to Clint. When Kate reminded Yelena that Clint, in spite of the number of people he’s killed, is “still an Avenger,” the Russian barked back, “What does that word even mean? Huh? That it holds so much power?” It was a stark reminder, as seen in Black Widow, that Yelena doesn’t see the Avengers the same way Natasha did, and especially not after Romanoff died while she was one of the Avengers.

Yelena liked to mock Natasha for being part of the Avengers. In Belova’s eyes, her ‘sister,’ was one of the weakest members of a team made up of superpowered gods. Yelena didn’t understand how a Black Widow assassin like Natasha could become a superhero, and she manifested her confusion by making fun of Natasha’s famous superhero landing and hair flip. Yelena also chided Natasha for becoming famous, appearing on magazine covers, and being idolized by millions. After Natasha’s death, Yelena has even less regard for the Avengers, in spite of the fact that they saved the world (including Yelena). To Belova, the Avengers were just the conduit that got her big sister killed.

Given Yelena’s upbringing, or lack thereof, after the few happy years she spent as a child living with Alexei, Melina, and Natasha as a family in Ohio, it’s also possible that Belova has another reason to resent the Avengers. Natasha considered Clint, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and the other heroes to be her family, all the way up to her death. In Black Widow, Natasha hurt Yelena’s feelings because she considered their Russian family fake, although Romanoff admitted that their family was “real” after all at the end of the film. Yelena’s hostility towards the Avengers likely stems from Natasha choosing them over her as her family, and she blames Nat’s chosen family, especially Clint, as the reason Romanoff is dead.

Unlike Natasha, who joined SHIELD and the Avengers to wipe the “red from her ledger,” Yelena became a contract killer so there’s little chance she will follow in Romanoff’s footsteps to become an Avenger. However, Yelena, in her current state, wouldn’t fit in with the Avengers anyway if the super-team assembles again. Belova is likelier to join the Dark Avengers team that Contessa Valentina de Fontaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) is putting together. As Kate Bishop learned in Hawkeye, Yelena Belova has no rosy idea of herself as a superhero who saves the world and she has outright contempt for the Avengers, especially Clint Barton.
