Equal parts sporty and fashionable, Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) is a beloved character on Pretty Little Liars. While she loves her friends, she’s not afraid to be unique and stand out from them, and that’s really inspiring. Over seven seasons, fans saw Emily find herself, devote herself to swimming, and think about a future beyond Rosewood and its creepy happenings.

In the quest to find A, it can be easy to overlook some of the flaws of this popular show, but there are definitely some problems that fans have noticed. Most of all, there are a lot of issues with Emily’s character, and they only worsened as the series went on.

10 Only Had One Major Interest With No Future Plans

It was never clear what Emily’s future plans would be. Yes, she loved to swim and she was really good at it, but how would that translate to a real career?

As the series progressed, it was strange that Emily didn’t really explore any other hobbies and interests beyond swimming, and this seems like a big issue with the way that the character was written.

9 Trusted People Too Easily

Emily has many love interests and in this regard, she trusted people very easily. This is a major character flaw and one way that she got worse throughout the series..

Since Emily knew that her best friend (and the girl she has always been in love with) disappeared and that someone was out to get her and her friends, she wouldn’t be so quick to trust new people. But instead of backing off or seeming suspicious, she fell for Sara Harvey (Dre Davis), who ended up being bad news as she was close with Big A and helping them out.

8 Struggled To Find Lasting Love, Which Wasn’t Great For Representation

Fans loved seeing Emily and Paige McCullers (Lindsey Shaw) together, but they definitely had their ups and downs, and it’s safe to say there were more tough times than happy ones. Couple that with the fact that Emily’s first girlfriend Maya St. Germain (Bianca Lawson) actually died and it doesn’t feel like Emily’s love life was given much of a chance.

While it’s awesome that Emily represented an LGBTQ character on a mainstream teen drama, it’s a shame that she didn’t have a stable, steady relationship like some of the other girls. It was always impossible to tell if Paige was a good person or scheming all the time.

7 One Particular Storyline Didn’t Add Anything To The Character

In the seventh season episode “These Boots Were Made for Stalking,” a Rosewood High student said that Emily had behaved poorly toward her, and this is yet another upsetting example of representation of the character.

Why not write a storyline that painted Emily in a positive light? This storyline went nowhere since it wasn’t a surprise that Emily hadn’t done anything, as fans knew that from the beginning.

6 Her Storylines Got Messier

Not every teen drama’s storylines are awesome and that was certainly the case with Pretty Little Liars. One of Emily’s worst and most confusing storylines is when she decides to donate her eggs.

This was a weird thing for her to do, but it got even stranger because she did this all totally in secret. It seemed like she was up to no good and fans wondered if the seemingly sweet character was involved in something sketchy or even criminal. It just didn’t work for Emily, and this storyline should never have been part of the otherwise interesting show.

5 It Was Tough To Figure Out Her Family Life

At first, fans assumed that Emily’s parents supported and loved her no matter. She definitely seemed like she adored her parents. But then she came out and her mom Pam had a big problem with it, which was difficult to watch. Then when Emily’s dad passed away, she and her mom didn’t really see eye-to-eye again or seem to spend all that much time together.

It was tough to figure out Emily’s family life, and it was unclear whether her parents were good people who loved her or if they were too rigid and strict.

4 Many Of Her Actions Are Very Strange

As PLL continued, Emily got worse and worse because her actions became really strange. In Season 4, she and her mom can’t stay in their house since it was destroyed, which means going to a motel.

Emily decides that it’s a good idea to sleep at Ali DiLaurentis’ (Sasha Pieterse) house and then goes to Spencer Hastings’s (Troian Bellisario). Why wouldn’t she stay with her mom? It seems like as time went on, Emily made more and more confusing choices.

3 Her Reasons For Staying In Rosewood Don’t Work

Of all the liars, Emily is the least likely person to stay in Rosewood and yet by season 7, she’s still there.

The only reason Emily is still in the town that she grew up in and has mixed feelings about is because this is a show that needs its major players in the same place. It doesn’t make sense that Emily wouldn’t move away and stay away, especially when her dad dies and it’s hard for her to deal with that.

2 Pined After Ali And Didn’t Show Enough Strength

Emily spent a lot of the series pining after Alison DiLaurentis, and even though the two did start dating when towards the end of PLL’s run, it’s definitely true that Ali could have been sweeter to her.

She didn’t treat Emily the way that she deserved, and that felt like a flaw on Emily’s part. She should have stood up for herself more instead of running into Ali’s arms the moment that Ali decided that she could consider dating her. Fans wanted to see more strength from Emily.

1 The Character’s Conclusion Fell Flat

Not every TV series finale is awesome, and while Pretty Little Liars did deliver a nice last episode, the conclusion to Emily’s story wasn’t as great. She was given a happy ending that didn’t actually take place, as fans later discovered that she and Ali had trouble.

It would have been nice to learn that Emily had some other positive things in her life, but fans were left with a lot of questions about what Emily Fields would be up to now that the show was over.
